I am confused why our recruiting in the ACC has not improved. I would have thought that being in a premier conference would have given us an edge especially over the new Big East and the AAC. I would have thought kids would want to play in a great conference against great players.
I am not sure that Pitt is in no mans land. Not a conference that is any longer in the East and Pitt is far from the South. Pitt is always at a disadvantage because Pittsburgh puts out very few division 1 players. It is no coincidence that our best team in the current era had the best college player to come out of Pittburgh in many years. Dejuan Blair made the difference in that team.
I think this years team was really affected by having no true 5. I liken it to a NFL team with no QB. Tough to win.
Much has been discussed about our lack of defense this year. Having a center that could block or alter shots would certainly have helped.
Not the entire reason but a big factor. I think the fair question is how did we get in this situation. It's not like Pitt hasn't recruitied other big men in Dixon's regime. Sometimes you just miss. Look a couple years ago everyone was thinking Jay Wright at Nova had lost it. Now he has a good chance at being a # 1 seed.
How fast can Pitt and Dixon turn it around?. Quickly if they get a center that contributes next year. If Pitt whiffs again then next year might be problematic. I thought this team was mentally spent in the last four games. I think the sophomores who played a lot of minutes just ran out of gas.
The sophomores will get stronger both physically and mentally next year. A kid like Heron would really help. He looks like the real deal.
