I am not worried about the Penn State Game whatsoever after reading what reed put up in his Podcasts and Eric Wassel Article combine with what Coach Pat Narduzzi had to say, all of you will enjoy and can add to these Great Pitt Fans....I Put It Up For Our Penn State Posters that Post On The Lair To Comment Too! Another Great Game Will Be Seen In 2017...Great Read From Reed!

Eric Wassel Article:
Excerpts:

Reed Kohberger in Pitt Football, Spring Practices April 16, 2017
Reed is a stats guy. Regular readers of the Pitt POV know this. I sometimes think that statistics do not lie, while at other times I believe that they can be misleading.

For example, one of the most statistically successful QBs in Pitt football history is TS (it pains me to say the name)Tino Sunseri. Yet I am not alone in my belief that he was nothing more than a mediocre QB who was a Wanny favorite. We all know that he NEVER in three years led us to a come from behind victory. So in his case, the stats are both misleading and deceiving.........
......................
I mean, when your purported first string QB (Browne) is being protected by third string linemen and throwing to second string receivers (no disrespect meant to Tre Tipton, who is going to contribute this year), it’s dangerous to take too much from a game like this....................
..............
But the eye test does not lie. I’ll be passing along what my eyes saw today from the 40 yard line. I’ll be interested to hear the comments of others in attendance that share or disagree with the views which I express. Here’s what I saw…..
.................
After watching warm-ups, I came away with one primary thought: we are well positioned at QB and have better depth behind center than we have in awhile. Specifically, I’d say that all of our QBs appear have the arm strength to make the throws necessary to move the ball down the field.

............

Some Comments On Reed Website Highlights:

I almost hate to say it but in viewing his highlights he reminds me a little like a taller version of Doug Flutie.

Dr. Tom
BTW, not sure, but is Damonte Carter even on campus yet? Pretty sure that that JC transfer is coming in during the Summer with the rest of his recruiting class.

HCPN is getting better and better in putting together his team.

Narduzzi has made it ultra clear that he is just not letting any of his top secret espionage/CIA/FBI leak out to the enemy. He’s a little kooky about all that. Translation = we can take very little from the QB’s warming up on the sidelines and what happened on the field yesterday................PITT has a QB for years to come.

Overall, the Defensive line was stronger than the offensive line.

TX_Panther
i like the eye test myself and how players respond to the player.

Maddox seemed glued to this receiver.

Cam Carter won’t arrive on campus until the summer.

Listened to Reed's commentary and find his prediction on offensive points per game fairly credible--a drop off of 5-7 points per game. Where I tend to disagree is his prediction on points per game the defense will allow. He predicts it will be around 32-33 points per game. I believe the defense will be a lot better than that and only allow 7-10 points per game less than the 32-33 he predicts.

Based on an only slightly improved defense and a less productive offense Reed believes a 7-5 regular season record is likely. I see no worse than 9-3 based on the defense being vastly improved.

Thanks for sharing!

There isn't a classier guy in the business.

Reed is the man!

While I am excited to hear the development & coming together of the QB position as a whole it cannot be dismissed that we actually only need that 1 QB playing on gameday to be in total control of his game & the offense as a unit.
Don't get me wrong, it's very comforting to have such promising talent coming up behind whoever wins the job but we need that guy who wins the job to raise his gameday performance to a whole lot more than just potential.
W/ having to face St Penn & OSU within the 1st 3 weeks of the season is quite a challenge for a experienced returning starter let alone a kid starting under a new OC & possibly a new program altogether......
Just saying that once we get to camp in late July early Aug. that the staff will have their 1 or 2 QB's locked down & make it a point to get them as much work w/ the first team contenders for starting positions.
Just the way Coach Duzz emphasized that they awarded 2 QB's red jerseys & how pissed he was that a late hit occurred on 1 of those QB's told me that it's already pretty clear that Browne & DiNucci are far & away the 2 QB's in contention.
Pickett & MacVettie both are talented but just too raw just yet to truly compete for major PT this year. I believe they would have also been in red had the staff really considered their challenging for serious pt this coming season.
We all know the history of Browne as his pedigree coming out of HS speaks for itself but I think some on this site have dismissed just how much of a gamer & competitor that Ben really is....the kid has his physical limitations, etc. but whenever I watched him lead his HS team in their biggest games it was apparent how much his teammates looked for him to lead. The kid just seemed to always find a way(under pressure in the biggest moments of the game) to make a play.
I really feel Ben has that it factor necessary to be a starter for us if need be.....what he may not have as far as classic fundamentals I think he makes up for w/ savy, swagger, leadership, etc.
When that 1 QB is selected to be our Guy I hope he's ready to do it starting in that 1st month. We need to really hope we do not get into a back & forth at the QB position playing against the St. Penn's & Okla. St's, etc.

H2 PITT !!!
p.s. what I do believe is that whoever our QB is he recognizes that he does not have to do it all on his own & uses his teammates, playmakers to take much of that early pressure to make plays off of himself & onto them. The overall talent upgrade at multiple positions will be our new QB's biggest asset. I hope in those initial first few games that they get used.

Good post as usual from you.

It is tough to predict a full season until August when Final Starters are decided and then adjustments after game 1 to 2 and then injuries with depth problems that arise during the season. This is why I use the Toss Up System for Predictions based on When a Team Plays and the Coaches that prep a Team and Game Plan more than Stats. The Coaches know the Stats and more importantly who is healthy and how the QB is performing or feeling, but they guard that info like National Security! Reed likes the numbers and i like those that do things different from others and add that into any evaluating process.

I just know Franklin has brought in the Higher Recruits he needs to compete with Michigan and OSU and rests of the Big Ten, a great OC in Moorhead, and McSorley perfect for his system and they have all the edges for this PSU-PITT Game so early.

In addition, I know Coach Narduzzi in his first two years as Head Coach and his Coaching Staff has improved the Pitt Recruits and Players into focused competitive Teams that play 4 Quarters all game long, but still need more Talent and Depth to compete on the Top 25 Level. Still, they will show up with good Game Plans on Game Day and seldom get blown away but mostly prepared and why they have won and lost many more close games in the first 2 seasons.

Pitt Defense will be improved but when is as important due to the New LBs. Pitt Offense will be Very good how much depends on Watson & QBs now. Moreover, Pitt Special Teams have played big roles in contributing to those close Wins and Losses ass well, and that is always harder to gauge every game?

Penn State Spring Game is next week but won't know until August for all teams after Recruits arrive and if any special players come out of them.
