Being only 5 at the time I didnt remember how good of a team the 1980 Pitt Panthers actually were. You could even argue that this team was better then the 1976 Championship Team. I watched a copy of the 1980 Gator Bowl last night and watched a Pitt Team totally destroy the #8 South Carolina Gamecocks led by Heisman Winner George Rogers. Pitt boasting the #1 Defense in the country and one of the best offensive lines ever. Coaching Staff with Jackie Sherrill and Foge Fazio. Assistants Bob Davie and Kirk Ferentz were also on that staff. Look at the talent on that roster. 3 NFL 1st round draft picks that year with Hugh Green, Randy McMillian, and Mark May. You also have Jim Covert and Russ Grimm on the OL along with May. Throw in 2nd round pick that year Ricky Jackson, along with players such as Dan Marino, Willie Collier, Dwight Collins, Tim Lewis, Sal Sunseri just to name a few. (Sorry if I forgot to mention someone). As Pitt fans its tough to remember where this program was during that mid 70's to mid 80's stretch run. I would encourage anyone to watch that game that needs reminded. Hopefully one day we will witness that again and I will get to share those moments with my son that my Dad got to share with me. Until then I will be sitting in Section 507 Row A cheering on my Panthers at every home game. Good Day Everyone and Hail2Pitt!!!
