Reid to LSU

So don't recruit top guys? Which is fine. Maybe we have to focus on transfers etc like bell in baseball. Or mostly on developing players like Dixon.
No. Identify and recruit guys you can realistically get early. Find ones that fit your system (if you have one). And when you win more games and have more to sell take a shot at an elite recruit. It’s a waste of time until then

Capel is a pathetic recruiter
Yes he is but not because of this one. There was no way were going to pay for a kid rated this high. We aren't paying so he's got to live in that 75-150 range....the types of players who are not quite rated highly enough to get a bag.

Will Wade though, man, even if this is legit, that dude has huge balls because for a guy who the FBI is building a case against allegedly, to "win" a recruit in this manner just looks shady AF. If Book can go to prison, I dont know how Wade doesnt. Probably wont be for 5-6 more years but still

What on earth are you talking about? The FBI case has been closed for years. It fell apart. He’s gonna get hit by the NCAA at some point and nothing else.

The fact that Pitt was in the kid’s top 3 was a victory and a credit to Capel and his staff. I don’t think any coach in the last 30 years at Pitt would have a shot at this guy. The bottom line is Capel and Co. probably couldn’t promise the guy he would have an NBA opportunity after year 1 and LSU probably did.

I wonder how many recruits(big men) were waiting for Reid to decide before announcing their’s? I think the recruiting board will speed up in the next couple of weeks. By end of May, Capel will have his roster set.

Focus on good players who you can legitimately land. Stay in your end of the pool.

Pitt has made Top 3s for many big time recruits throughout its history.

The ones we are likely to get are the transfers or borderline 3 to 4 star guys which may take some development. Which is fine.

We are not getting these players in the 75-150 range either.

I’ve been saying this almost verbatim since that blow hard Barnes ran off Dixon and brought in his stooge Curley for one last payoff. I would have rather had BK and a Pitt centric staff and style to recruit to than an old faded Gunslinger who has shoot blanks against guys armed with AR15’s like Coach Capel because his Administration won’t play the game.

You have to put a lot of time in on guys like this if you ever want them to come to Pitt. Would be nice to win one though.
You’ve got to establish a program that kids want to play for before any of these kinds of players will seriously consider
Pitt. That means winning and postseason play.

It would be awesome if this kid had committed to Pitt. But it was a pipe dream. And frankly it was probably the right business decision by this kid to stay away from a program with so much instability and with virtually no chance to even so much as have a winning season with or without him.

I don’t agree with Sauce often but he’s right that Capel needs to forget about these 5 star types and double down his time, energy and resources on recruiting good solid players with competitive drive and winning backgrounds. The AAU circuits and basketball mill prep schools aren’t necessarily the best places to find those kinds of kids. Put simply, Pitt needs more Brad Wanamakers and less Khem Birchs.

I honestly don't think it even has anything to do with winning. What these guys want is a platform to showcase their talents and get them a lottery pick. Capel started chasing these kids because he landed them at Duke. If he had landed at least a couple of them so far and proved that he could get them drafted, he'd be signing these kids no matter the W-L record. The problem is he's struck out on all of them and he has only one single kid who has any NBA attention, and he might have played himself out of the draft this past season.

All Capel has done in three seasons is show that he can mismanage his talent and chase kids away from the program. Does a kid prepping for the 2022 draft want to spend his only season in a toxic locker room, waiting for his teammates to quit in the middle of the season?

But wouldn't you think it has more to do with going to the NCAA tourney, Pitt's chances are so slim now who wants to chance playing in the NIT instead.

There’s optimism and then there’s whatever you’d call this.

If a kid really cared about the NCAA tournament, he wouldn't be a one-and-done in the first place.

Wrong.

NCAA tournament success = exposure. Getting 14 and 8 as a freshman post man for a losing team will get you some recognition. Getting those same numbers as a freshman for a team on an NCAA tournament run make you a household name. The NCAA tournament is the tail that wags the dog when it comes to how players and coaches are viewed.

And-most of those top players are very competitive, very egotistical and want to show the world what they’re capable of, prove that they’re not all hype, and make the NBA evaluators take additional notice. That’s hard to do when the only people that see you play are a handful of ACCN subscribers.

I wasn't clear enough, I mean if a kid wants to showcase he surely wants to be on a team that can play in the tourney.

We're here talking about LSU, right? The LSU that lost in the second round?

The top two picks in the 2020 draft went to Georgia (16-16) and Memphis (10-8 in AAC).

Like it or not, UGA, Memphis and LSU are all quite a bit higher in the college hoops pecking order than Pitt of the past several years. Dude we have won a total of 19 ACC games in the past 5 years. No 5 star kid is going to come to a program like that, unless there is a big ass bag of money involved, bigger than the others guys’ bags.

And I’m sure the money bags helped. Wiseman was actually suspended halfway through his freshman season for taking Penny’s pennies. 1,150,000 of Penny’s pennies if I remember correctly.

Hey, I’ll enjoy it as much as anyone on this board if the same thing happens to Effin’ Reid, Mama Drama Bear and Wet Willy Wade in 2021. Kind of a questionable move to hitch your career wagon to a coach that is the subject of an active FBI investigation, no? My opinion anyway.

All I said was that kids want to play somewhere that will get them drafted, tournament contender or not. You said everyone wants to showcase in March. You're backpedalling.

My first message on this was that Capel could have turned Pitt into a Georgia or LSU where this kind of recruit comes through every few years, but he failed to land ANY of them and now he has nothing to offer. He had a potential ACC POY who appears now to be totally off the draft board.

I'm not backpedaling. I'm pretty sure many or most of these potential one and done kids believe that they can have their cake and eat it too. They can have the money, lead a team on a tournament run, and get drafted.

All I'm saying is I think the only box the present day Pitt program checks for a player like that is unlimited PT. It's not a very attractive way to spend your one year of college basketball.
