Repercussions for transferring during middle of the season?

Are there any repercussions if you transfer during the middle of the season? I get that there might be special rules for this pandemic season and thus repercussions (if any exist) are arguably fair game to be excused during the 2020-21 year, but in general, what happens if you decide to transfer mid-season? There is another thread about giving the walk-on a scholarship ... I would think that if you quit the athletic program through which you receive a scholarship, you would forfeit your scholarship for that semester, and I doubt the school would give you a tuition refund if you just drop out of school mid-semester, so are the mid-season transfers on the hook for paying that semester's tuition out of pocket? And if so, can the Pitt walk-on be given Toney or Johnson's scholarship for the 2021 spring semester?

You make an excellent point. I have had two d-2 players leave during the year. One had family issues, and there was no problem. The other was homesick and was asked to stay till semester to be released, came home and was given a bill for the semester. Parents refused to pay case went to court they lost.

Yeah I am fine with giving kids no wait transfers. Especially as we see with coaches up and leaving. But.....there has to be some sort of restraint shown for these inseason transfers. Only allow the portal to be in affect outside of the regular season. I mean, you can outright quit, there is no law preventing that. But then there should be some ramifications such as sitting out a semester if you do it in season.

Why though? All you are accomplishing with this is forcing a disgruntled player to stick around for an extra month or two. If a guy doesn't want to be there, the team is better off without them being around at that point. It's good for the team and for the player if a guy who wants to be gone doesn't sulk around for 10 games. The "punishment" is that he forfeits the rest of this semester's eligibility. X and Toney are already "losing" whatever games they miss the rest of this season. Would Pitt really be better off if those two were forced to be on the team until the end of March?

That’s why my suggestion was to sit out as many games as you missed

Or the portal doesn’t open until after the conference schedule

I mean - players who want to leave will leave regardless
Let’s just drop the “transfer “ charade and say they quit .
You haven’t transfered until you’Re at your new school .

wonder if they are finishing the academic semester at Pitt ?

My biggest problem is that Pitt might be punished when these kids quit mid-season, depending on how it works. Is Pitt allowed move that scholarship to kid who is actually playing on the team for the whole year, and if not, why not?

It's a little out of hand. The other thing, the transfer thing seems to be the moment something doesn't got their way, they want to move on. At least some deterrent would maybe stick around enough to see if things get better.

who can transfer and get credits mid semester? any student? nope

i think everyone forgot about classes in this thread

TV announcers on the Wake Game mentioned their opinion that entry into the transfer portal shouldn’t be allowed during any sports season. They are right, IMHO. It only should be allowed before or after the season.

Repercussions for players who leave mid season is to sit remainder of season and part of next season. Same goes for coaches. You bail on a team you must sit out the remainder of season unpaid.
