Hypothetically, if Pitt suffered another 3-9 season and they were to fire Narduzzi after the season, who would be some candidates to replace him?

Hire a D3 coach for 200K and use the savings to buy players. Players win games.

I'd hire the D3 coach and then use the $5 million in savings to spend $1 million on a decent QB, 1 WR, 2 OL and a DL.

SMF is on the right track. I'd personally just promote Kade Bell to HC and let the young up and comer have a crack at it. No need to go the whole Haywood ordeal again.

Its 70% players, 30% coaching, maybe 80/20.

Miami has struck out in the coaching department but also their players, though highly recruited, have been extremely overrated.

Their players also haven’t been highly recruited to the level that would overcome bad coaching. Removing Cristobal’s classes, they usually would lose the best players to like Georgia and Alabama, and end up with an overall recruiting ranking of like .88-ish on 247.
A class that averages out to a 3 Star average isn’t overcoming bad coaching. You get to get to like Les Miles level recruiting for that.

Another dumb post we have to endure until the football season starts. LOL!!!!

Sounds like the get rid of Dixon posts by some on the basketball board.

After Dixon was replaced Pitt had to endure over a decade before they could go to the NCAA Tournament (Jamie had Pitt going almost every year).

Pitt in the last 4 years had 17 players drafted into the NFL (7 Rounds), more than MOST teams.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

LOL!!!!

How did it work out for Pitt when Mike Gottfried (HC) was replaced with Paul Hackett (OC).

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

We're talking the coastal division of the ACC. They've outrecruited virtually everyone in the division and they finished 1st - 1 time in the COASTAL. They mostly have 3rd thru 5th place finishes in a very average conference.

I agree. But how many first rounders or second rounders have they had during that time?

It takes a lot of talent to overcome bad recruiting. I’m not as interested in the ACC recruiting rankings, as the ACC doesn’t recruit that well as a whole.

I’m not going to go back forever, but let’s start with 2015, since that’s when they hired somebody generally regarded as a pretty good recruiter. So it will help boost their recruiting average for purposes of this.

2015 they had a Team Calculator average of 86.91. So a middle 3* team.

2016: 86.6

2017: 87.7

2018: 88

2019: 88

2020: 88.8

2021: 89 (their first year above a 3* average. But only two 5* guys listed).

2022: 89 (two 5*)

23: 89.9 (four 5*)

2024 hasn’t been released yet.

So basically they’ve been a 3* team every year but the last 3. When they became the lowest 4* you can be.

I agree with average coaching that should be enough. But it’s not elite talent. There aren’t even a lot of high level recruits. It’s not like it’s a bunch of 5* and high ranking 4*, mixed in with a bunch of 3* guys that are bringing the overall class average down. There aren’t a lot of 5* guys. Basically the bottom of the classes wouldn’t fall out, but the top of the classes weren’t that great either. A lot of .89 to .90 type recruits, to allow a .88 to .89 average.

Should that be good enough to beat the ACC Coastal teams with even average coaching? Sure. But they haven’t gotten average coaching.
According to 247, Miami’s recruiting for most of the run you listed has been the equivalent of 2023 TCU’s talent roster. Did anything about 2023 TCU talent level impress you? How much winning do you think 2023 TCU would do with bad coaching?

You need Les Miles level recruiting to overcome Les Miles.

Holy christ, you can't even wait for the season to start.

Planted troll or self loathing yinzer... or maybe both?

Lmao y’all are angry behind those keyboards. This was purely asked out of curiosity, hence the post starting with hypothetically.

Narduzzi isn’t going anywhere even with another 3-9 season, but a high D1 coaching friend of mine told me that one of the best coaches in the country is the guy JMU just hired from Holy Cross. He said that guy is innovative, great at recruiting and will be a big time coach in 3 years.

Kind of tied into this discussion:

The Cover 3 Podcast was discussing win total O/U for the ACC. And Bud Elliot was talking about Miami, and he went with the over for the win total.

But then he went into a discussion about how Miami would actually be a good value bet to win the national title if you are betting the over.

And his reasoning was this is the most talented team they’ve had since 2003. And this is actually a team that looks like it belongs on the field with Georgia at a lot of positions. And that hasn’t been the case in decades.

Putting aside Miami as a value bet or anything like that. Bud Elliot is one of the scouting directors for 247. To hear him say the talent level hasn’t been elite for 20 years, and this is the first time since they were still playing with Butch Davis’ players that they actually have national title level team, does kind of go to my point above.

You need elite talent to overcome bad coaching. And they haven’t had it.
