Here is an inside and up close report on a key aspect of Pitt vs UNC game on Thur pm.

I watch just about every UNC game and attend a few UNC games per year when not at Pitt games.

UNC is a very tough matchup for Pitt's defense, especially Pitt's LBs, SS and FS. Before the season I felt that UNC was the best team in the division with the best player in the ACC conference (RB Hood). UNC offense has the most athletes in the ACC outside of Clemson. UNC's 3 WRs and TE are going to really challenge Pitt's LBs and DBs. The height of the UNC WRs are touch matchups for Pitt's CBs; however, that is the 3rd best offensive advantage for UNC.

The 2nd best offensive matchup for UNC is the TE and slot WR against Pitt's back up FS and SS. Pitt's #25 and #26 cannot cover UNC's TE and slot WR. Let's hope that Pitt can get back their top safeties for this game. Whitehead also needs to have a great game. He was off versus Cuse. Hopefully that was because he did not practice much.

The 1st best offensive matchup for UNC is the running of QB Williams or RB Hood. With the spread offensive Pitt's MLB and OLBs are going to have to make a lot of tackles 1 on 1. Williams and Hood are too fast and quick for Pitt's MLB and OLBs (except for Freezer). It is almost impossible to tackle Hood 1 on 1.

The only way Pitt can stop UNC is to get them before they get started and that will involve getting them in the backfield via DL penetration or blitzing. UNC's run game reminds me of WVU run game with White at QB. The only problem is that Pitt has given up a lot of big plays against the run game when blitzing and even in the base defense.

It will be very interesting how Coach Duzz designs the Pitt's D vs UNC.

See you on Thur in the Burgh.

Peace,
NGF
