Right now, John Hugley is a better player than Efton Reid

John had some pretty impressive moves yesterday. Big time moves.
I’ve liked him as a player from the first time I saw him last year. He showed a few flashes of that in his brief time before his legal troubles. Thought he was the kind of 4 year guy we’d become accustomed to and do now even more. Hoping like hell he’ll even be around but I suspect he’ll have more than a few good options if he wants them.

Would big John have been a difference maker last year? I thought it was bad luck we didn’t have him last year when we really needed a big man.

Be careful. Not only are you sounding positive on something, you also appear to maybe changing your mind.
I still think he’ll struggle with length in the ACC and he’s playing way too many minutes. He’s playing more minutes than Big Fella ever did.

I also prefer guys who can block shots and or step out and hit 3’s. Neither of which he does well. He seems like he’ll be a solid ACC player though.

Yea I don’t completely disagree but he’s pretty crafty so he may deal with the length some. But I don’t see him being much of a shot blocker or shooting threat especially from 3 either. Probably ever.

Next what I’d really love to see is for him to get in tip top shape. And it would be nice if he could get his minutes reduced by a few but that ain’t happening for now.

I think he can become a service able threat from 3. His shot is fine. He just needs to tighten it up.

Efton needs time to develop. Other than just his size, he doesn't bring a lot to the table right now.

Hugley is much better.
He’s a freshmen averaging 10/6 on 55 percent shooting and 37.5 percent from 3 in 22 mins. Do you think there’s many freshmen bigs in the country averaging those kind of numbers???

he’s also getting less volume in shots and playing on a much better team.

He’s clearly come a long way in his conditioning…his conditioning and overall physique are much further along than I thought they would be after the layoff. It’s still not quite where it needs to be, but I think it speaks well of John and the people around him that he’s clearly stayed focused and continued to improve in those areas even when his future was up in the air.

I think a lot of that probably has to do with the competition LSU has faced so far. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers he puts up in conference play.

I've only seen him play two games, tonight and against Wake Forest. He definitely has some potential, but right now he's just really raw and not very good, tbh. He's a liability on defense away from the basket. Offensively, he isn't very skilled. Against Wake, almost every basket that wasn't an uncontested dunk came on a jump hook. Almost every situation was identical - Reid got ball in the post with the floor spread, then he freely dribbled attempting to back his man down (Wake did not double team) When he picked up his dribble he often made several pivots (which really look awkward) before taking his jump hook. A couple of shots were really nice. A couple of others that fell in were extremely ugly and pure luck.

I think he's a guy that most teams would love to have in their program, only for his size and potential. He's a work in progress though. He's not really an impact guy. As far as this season goes, LSU would go as far without him as they will with him, imo.

The one thing i like about John is despite his conditioning. He's a high energy big.
His motor is there.
Capel should try to get him a little more rest using Oladapo and Collins. If he could get
his minutes to about 30 he would be able to finish better late in the game.
