** The theme for this evening is easy – that is – don’t you just love College Basketball?!

** I took the long walk back to my car from Robert Morris’ new arena thinking such. Following Evansville’s upset of Kentucky at Rupp made me know it for sure.

** The Colonials had a splendid time a few years back when UK visited their old arena and they handed the Wildcats a legendary loss. And for 20 minutes in this contest, it looked like the Colonials might get to christen their fantastic new facility with another win of enormous magnitude.

** The College Basketball atmosphere fans got to experience at RMU was wonderful. The place was packed with upstart, upset ready fans, and a nice contingent of Panther faithful as well.

** For too long in this contest, the Panthers seemed all too willing to make this game another tremendous story for all of College Basketball.

** It wasn’t simply that the Panthers were playing bad basketball when they allowed RMU to go on an 18-0 run and take a double digit lead. Overall, it appeared to me that our Panthers were trying to play team basketball, much unlike we witnessed at the upset at the Pete four days ago. They just weren’t doing it very well.

** The Panthers weren’t even playing terrible defense during that same stretch, as much as they were overplaying to some extent, leaving themselves vulnerable to the extra pass and the open shooter.

** And just as one would expect to go according to a Cinderella script on a night like this, the Colonials knocked them down.

** I like Robert Morris basketball, and I was glad their fans got to enjoy a strong handful of wonderful moments on opening night.

** But not long after, the Panthers buckled down and the game fell into a more expected path of an ACC team against a Northeast Conference foe.

** The game followed that path because Trey McGowens certainly brought his A-game, much more than a team like Robert Morris could handle.

** What was most troubling about Trey’s outing on Saturday wasn’t his lack of production, but more his problematic decision making that left him too often out of control. From today’s opening tip, Trey looked determined to be smart and make the right plays. He made so many of them tonight.

** Coach Capel rewarded Ryan Murphy’s and Terrell Brown’s strong play in our first two games with starting spots, and both responded in kind.

** Expecting monster games from Ryan night-in and night-out is much more than he might be able to deliver. But production like we received like tonight will serve the Panthers well this season and beyond.

** RMU looked to be keying on Ryan, and he helped the Panther cause by sticking mostly to what he can do, instead of try to make plays he probably can’t.

** Still, the biggest reason I’m glad Ryan is a Panther is because he would probably be near the top of my most hated opponent players if wore different colors.

** It’s probably too bad that Terrell Brown may not even become a favorite of many Panther fans. We all understand that he just doesn’t play the kind of game that appears inspiring. But he’s starting to become quietly and consistently productive in a very important way.

** Terrell’s play as a rim protector gives our Panthers a chance to be a truly formidable defensive team if we can get a few of our perimeter issues figured out.

** Does anyone know if something happened to Eric Hamilton, or was Coach Jeff just that much happier with Terrell?

** The Panthers already sport a truly formidable defensive player in Au’Diese Toney, and time and time again tonight he was a stopper. I said this to my neighbor today, none other than @Seneca_Valley. Yet we both agreed even a defensive stopper needs to score from time to time, so hopefully AD will get some confidence from his second half points.

** And then there is Xavier.

** He played his worst 20 minutes of his Pitt career in the first stanza. This time, he looked more that “just off.” He looked plain old bad.

** His second 20 minutes were improved in the sense that he played more like a solid point guard than an ineffective scoring lead guard. But something is certainly lacking in his confidence in finishing at the rim.

** With Xavier taking better care of the basketball, he set the tone for the whole Panther team who turned it over just 3 times in the second half. And that stat was the biggest reason this ended as your basic boring ACC vs NEC contest, instead of an upset for the ages.

** The Panthers even passed the ball a little better as a team in the second half. But they still have a way to go before we can even start thinking about them as a decent passing team.

** Beyond great College Basketball atmospheres like we witnessed tonight, one of the biggest reasons I enjoy College Hoops is because of upsets like Evansville’s tonight.

** But of course, we all like it so much better when our team wins. So with that, congrats to RMU for their fine new facility. And a bigger congrats go to our Panthers for leaving it up to another team to become the Colonials' victim in their new home court.

The arena had an enjoyably noisy atmosphere for a college game. It was fun.

Indeed it was a long walk back to the car. Doubtless the cold temperature lengthened its perception. Seemed like the parking set-up wasn't great, but maybe I'm just being grouchy.

Thanks DT.

RE: Does anyone know if something happened to Eric Hamilton, or was Coach Jeff just that much happier with Terrell?

IMHO, the latter was the case. Brown played well late vs Nichols and was playing so well today that Capel didn't want to mess with the chemistry. That seems to be a Capel coaching trait--staying with lineups that are doing well--and he has said as much several times.

By the way, Brown looked gassed on TV near the end of the game and it looked like he missed those last couple of FTs because he was so gassed. He played 35 minutes per the box score--He sure can't be used to that amount of PT in a game.

When the game was pretty well in hand, I was thinking maybe he would want to get Eric some work.

Great first hand insight DT. I saw the game on TV and agree with all you said
especially your comments on team basketball and also comments on Toney.
It was clear from the outset that Capel during the last few days must have
had a major effect on Pitt's players. They were taking their time in the
half court sets, looking to find the open man and not forcing things.
They really appeared focused. Yes, team basketball.
Toney's D was excellent, as was his inside presence. He scored and even
hit a three. He looks taller than 6'6" on tv. How tall in person DT?

Trey's drives throughout the game were measured and not the crazy
acrobatic types we've seen so often. It's almost strange to see X as a pg
intent on setting things up, running the offense, and controlling the pace of
play, as opposed to taking it all in his own hands. He still turned it over
more than I'd like to see, but he was much more in control.

None of this happened by accident IMO. I'm certain it's a result of Capel
getting into their heads the last few days. I posted earlier that these
guys were told they'd be sitting if they didn't do what Capel was preaching.
Guess what?...tonight we saw the result of what he's been preaching.
Still a long way to go with a young and inexperienced team, but still a
decent turn around from the Nicholls game.

This nervous fan was never comfortable that the game was truly in hand until about the last 2-3 minutes--because of how inconsistent and sloppy/careless that this team has played for stretches so far this season.

Maybe Capel felt the same way and so kept the first teamers in to the very end.

Trey was too quick for them to guard. And when they sent more than one guy, he passed better than before. Hopefully we're figuring it out.

Friday will be a big test.

Trey said in a post-game radio interview that Coach Capel really “let him have it” after the Nicholls State game...

Still looks like there should be more kick-outs to me...

Go Pitt.

Agree. But who other than Murphy is capable of taking advantage of a kick-out?

Did it seem like maybe we took our foot off the gas and started killing time too early? Seems like we slowed considerably about the 5-6 minute mark. We had the game in hand, but why kill clock that early?

4 ACC wins at best. Pitt was the better team versus RMU but not by much.

Oddly enough the RMU basketball arena (4,000) holds more than their football stadium (3,000.)

I agree. Just like a contested 3-pointer, Trey and X can get a contested high-traffic shot at the rim at any time. That fine for AAU, but it's not good offense against team defenses at this level.

Murphy certainly is a viable option outside, but a kick-out to Drumgoole, Champagnie, or Trey/X (when open) is worth it just to keep the defense honest. Someone like Champagnie can have a hot night shooting (ala Sheldon Jeter or Ryan Luther), but we'd never know it because those opportunities aren't created with all the excessive dribbling and driving into double/triple team defenders from the point.

Liked the camera angles on tv, place looked nice.
Not sure yet about new Pete tv angles yet.

That's all very true, but you have to admit last night they didn't do all that
excessive dribbling and driving into double teams." X cut his drives down
considerably and played more under control as the game progressed.
Trey's drives were guarded, but he's so good at it, that he got to the hoop
and scored, or was fouled. More importantly, he was under control.

The bigger picture, and the most important one IMO is Capel and getting
these guys to play under control. It looked much better last night, but it's
still a work in progress. It takes time to break down a player's tendencies.
I hope it continues. this program is still in rebuild mode. X and Trey
are still only sophs. It's a very young and inexperienced team. I'm
optimistic.

About the parking, what time did you guys arrive? I got there at 4:30 because I had to go to will call to pick up our tickets. Parked right across the street and was inside the arena in about 45 seconds. And it was free.

Maybe I'm seeing things but it seems like there is some riff with X and Murphy, more on X's side. It seems like he doesn't want to pass the ball to Murphy at times. Maybe its selfishness.

My guess is that Toney is about 6-5 or a speck more. But he's not above 6-6, that's for sure.

4-16 in the ACC would be a very, very discouraging result. Knowing that we are already 1-0 against on of the better teams, I find it very hard to believe we will only win three more.

I said 7-13 before the season and I will stick with that for now.

I don't think we took our foot off the gas as much as I think Capel wanted the team to focus on running good team sets, instead of being overly aggressive (which caused many problems on Sat.)

That is basically how I see it in ACC play. I also called for 17 total wins.
Even though we're all disappointed by the Nicholl St. game, I still believe
this is a better team than last year.

Well Pitt already has 1 ACC win. They need to find 4 more out of the remaining ACC games to beat your prediction. I’ll take my chances and say they win more than 4 more.

Yup - I could see the jealously within the first half of the FSU game when Murph made those 2 big threes within 90 seconds of each other to help get us back into it after a long drought. Seemed like he almost went out of his way a few times not to high five Murphy when he was looking for it.

I def worry about X becoming a chemistry problem if things don't start going his way. He doesn't seem to like sharing the limelight early on in this season.

Hope to be totally wrong, but I've also noticed this. And I saw slightly the same from Trey against FSU, but not as bad. I know him and X are roommates and good friends, maybe they just need to adjust to having a third DESERVING mouth that needs to be fed.

I hope that all this pro ball noise isn’t affecting X’s attitude , he had a surprisingly excellent freshman season , but there’s huge holes in his game . Those holes are plainly obvious this season so far . Murphy’s presence should make both X and Trey far more effective players if they embrace him . Both need to realize Murphy’s skills will only open up driving lanes for them or increase their assists numbers . It’s early yet and both will get an earful from JC if they play selfishly . Trey’s 25 should open X’s eyes .
