Rodney Terry - Officially HC

Signs deal with Texas.
Makes sense. A few of the UT fans I sat near yesterday theorized that Terry was going to be named head coach all along, but the program/athletic department liked the idea of the team retaining the mindset of having to continue winning to keep him around.

Has he called one of those two time outs he kept in his pocket while his team imploded over the last 4 minutes at the end of the game yet?
He definitely needed to settle his team down when the momentum was swinging. I don’t think it will work long term, but Texas was in a difficult position.

He had some bad luck as well. It would have helped a ton to have Disu against Miami. I think he is a pretty good coach. His team went cold in the 2nd half and Miami deserves some credit for that. In addition, the refs turned the game into a foul fest which benefited Miami, and disrupted the overall flow of the game.

Terry is a good coach and will do well at Texas.
I guess if his resume up to the time Beard got canned doesn't count, you can say that.

Here's my take--much better coaches than Terry have failed there, and very recently. Terry is in over his head. This was Chris Beard's team and scheme.

Let's see what happens in the next couple of years.

His record before this season, at Fresno State and UTEP, was 163-156. Hardly seems worthy of such a promotion, despite this season at Texas.

Looking beyond the overall record, it does look like he took a bad Fresno State program and finished his time there with 3 20 win seasons. Tough to tell with UTEP given he was only there 3 years (including Covid).

Seems like more of an emotional hire rather than looking for the best fit but as you said we'll find out.

Its Texas. I think he had to make Final Four to get the job. If this were another type of program, ok, but its Texas. They have enough money to hire anyone.

If I had to bet money on his success or failure there, I’d bet on the latter. Back doored his way into a big boy job that’s well above his pay grade, IMO. His credentials prior to this season would never have gotten him a glance from that level of program. And it’s hard to give him much credit for taking Chris Beard’s team to the Elite 8 only to lose to a lower seeded opponent.
