Former Pitt standout Ronald Ramon has joined the Pitt Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant director of operations, head coachJeff Capel announced Monday morning. Ramon will assist the Pitt staff with recruiting visit logistics, alumni engagement and community service activities.
“We are thrilled to add Ronald to our staff,” said Capel. “It is important to me to have a former player and someone who has had the honor of wearing the Pitt jersey on our staff. Ronald’s knowledge of game, relationships in the community and with alumni, and passion for Pitt Basketball will be significant assets as we continue to build our culture here at Pitt. He was an outstanding player here at Pitt and will be an outstanding addition to our staff.”
Ramon recently concluded a professional career that included stints in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Venezuela. He also represented the Dominican Republic in a number of international competitions including the 2014 FIBA World Cup and 2019 FIBA World Cup.
A 2008 Pitt graduate, Ramon finished his collegiate career with 1,096 points, 254 rebounds, 339 assists and 100 steals, while helping the Panthers to a 101-35 record overall, four NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2008 Big East Tournament Championship. The Bronx, N.Y., native, remains ranked in the top 10 at Pitt in career three-point field goals (4th – 233), three-point attempts (4th – 590), three-point percentage (7th - .395) and assist-to-turnover ratio (5th – 2.04:1).
Ramon averaged 6.8 points per game and made 43 three-point field goals to earn Big East All-Freshman Team honors in 2005. He went on to average 8.0 or more points per game in each of the next three seasons, including a career-best 8.8 points per game while shooting 45.1 percent (74-of-164) from three-point range as a junior.
Pitt opens its season Wednesday, Nov. 6 with a home ACC contest against Florida State (8 pm – ESPNU). The Panthers’ home slate also includes visits from Rutgers, West Virginia, Louisville, Syracuse, North Carolina and Virginia among others.
