With a bye week it is a good time to assess the lame actions of renewing football and basketball series with WVU.
As stated the fans in Sec. 213 during the Pitt / GT game had to endure ignorant WVUcc fans for 3 quarters of negative taunts, along with public drunkenness before the ushers finally kicked them out of the stadium. Imagine the thousands of ignorant fans that will display this poor behavior in the stands during the Pitt - WV game in Morgantown.
Additionally while I attended the road game at Va. I was approached by a Univ of Va employee (formerly WVU employee) asking when Pitt would man up to play WV (he didn't know about the 2017 basketball and 2022 football agreements). I told him about the upcoming series and what a mistake on Pitt's part due to ignorance of the WVU fan base. He revealed that the long time football series between WV and Va. Tech was ended by Tech because of poor WVU fan behavior.
There is no room for the Mounties on Pitt's schedule, this poor behavior goes way back, I quit attending the games in Morgantown during the mid 1990s due to 2 consecutive road games where my car on one trip and the next trip my friend's cars were vandalized smashing windshields.
Physical threats abound going to the stadium and returning to your car. We remember the LSU fans at Morgantown, wife pregnant, husband beaten into a coma. Then there was Jamie and his coaching staff injured by thrown coins.
Sad state of affairs when I lived less than an hour from Morgantown and couldn't attend a Pitt game there. WVU has big time fan behavior problems mainly directed towards Pitt but as identified goes well beyond Pitt. If WVU wants the Pitt game every year then make them play in Pittsburgh every year as the visiting team.

I agree with the OP. I travel the five hours from Philly to go to Pitt games. Not only am I not going to the game in Morgantown, I will also not be making the ten hour round-trip to Pittsburgh for the WVU game. Why spend all of that time and money to have to put up with WVU fan behavior? Games are supposed to be fun.

I have come around to the idea of playing WVU again but I wished it was contingent upon the games in Morgantown being only played at noon and/or increased security measures such as like what they do in European soccer games. You have security serve as a buffer between the Pitt section and other sections. A WVU fan bought a ticket in the Pity section on Stubhub? He has to leave. Your buddy is going to the game with you but has WVU stuff on, he has to leave the section. This is what they do in Europe.

I like the games coming back but do think they needed to address security concerns.

People were throwing bottles into our section, I've had change thrown at me at a bball game (2002, true story), and some guy tried to punch me but missed.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE! THEY ARE HORRIS IGNORANT FANS AT WVU!
When the game is in Pittsburgh, The Pgh Police drunk tank is full up! Let's play PSU and ND regularly, and the hell with the hoopies.

If I were forced to pick WVU or PSU, I would go with WVU simply because I don't think they would cover up child rape by a football coach and then have masses of fans act as if they are the real victims. With that said, WVU fans are absolutely terrible and I don't want to see them. The list of their nonsense is a long one.

Unfortunately, Pitt is saddled with the two worst college football fan bases as our nearest rivals.

I agree 100% with Spineless there would be 1,000s of ignorant fans at a Wvu Vs Pitt football game!

I too am against the game. But I also understand the rivalry between the two schools.
When fan behavior becomes so out of hand that safety comes into play the administration
needs to take a stand and stop it.
Disruptive fans should get one warning. The second time it happens they should be removed from the
game. If a incident occurs legal action should be taken. This has to come from the schools administration
and examples need to be made to enforce the rules.

I posted this in another thread, and I'll repeat it here:

One of Scott Barnes' responsibilities is to put butts in seats. If Pitt fans were more loyal and supported their team better, there wouldn't be as many available seats for the inbreds to congregate.

I wish there were NO Hoopies at Pitt games - ever - but we're in no financial position to refuse money.

Been to many brawls, at Heinz, pitt stadium, 3 rivers and Mounaineer.. LIke the series but here is my advice. If you are gonna to to Morgantown, go with buddies, leave the kids at home, don't take the wife/girlfriend. If you are taking your "better 1/2" bring friends, guy friends and for the love of God, don't take your kids..

Don't have any Pitt stickers on your car.. It's as simple as that.. if you are with a small group of guys, 3 or 4 at least, you'll be fine.. You go with wifey and a little kid or two, you are making a bad decision.

And that is a SAD, SAD commentary that you have described. :( Having to be concerned about personal safety and well-being by going to a college football game. Personally have only experienced verbal abuse (Get out you Pitt mf'er!) Just for being there. But know others that were physically attacked.

The missus and I are about as threatening-looking as Archie and Edith Bunker, but that didn't stop the Hoopie faithful from throwing rocks at us. Our "sin" was wearing Pitt garb. That was enough for us - we'll never go to watch a sports event in Mo-town ever again.

We've been to road games in various other places (Notre Dame, Navy, Virginia, Duke - to name a few), and we've never experienced anything like this at those venues.

Yeah. My wife was with me when I got mf'ed at Mo'Town, too. Look, we've all heard about every kind of foul language there is so that's not the point. But that kind of behavior is way over the top. No need - or place - for it to be directed to someone just for attending a football game and causing no trouble at all. It was NOT a kid (student) that screamed the obscenity at me, either. Don't even think he was drunk. Although can't be certain of that. Just an obnoxious jackass. It was inside the stadium and he walked by and yelled that. Lots of hatred and vitriol from some of them down there. Especially towards Pitt it seems.

I like the game. Unfortunately, its one of the few unique things Pitt has.
Saw Barnes was on sideline during first half at Va and looked thoroughly disgusted.

the problem about wvu fans is that you expect it, verbal crap, foul language, taunts, etc, If you are with a group of guys. It's fine, no big deal. It's the times when some middle aged guy with wife and little kid will be there and they get the same treatment as 8 college kids wearing pitt would get.. That's what is annoying.. I've been young and dumb, mouthed off in enemy territory, at pitt games and away steeler games, I gave it and I sure as hell got it back. That's fine, im with some buddies, big deal.

But what kind of low life jerk off yells at a dad and mom, or a dad with a kid. That's the pathetic part. you are gonna scream and yell obscenities at a family? That's the crap that doesn't happen at most sporting events that will happen at a wvu game..

it's not that bad and I sense your sarcasm, just not an environment to take your kids too, that's all. It's football though, not a church picnic, should be leaving the wife and kids at home regardless..

I don't know... I have gone to see Pitt play football at Morgantown decked out in full Pitt gear with other Pitt friends and we faced nothing more that their standard Eat 'Doody' Pitt chants aimed our direction, which we just laughed off and played along with a sense of humor. Most of the older WVU fans were friendly toward us and loved to talk football. They almost seemed embarrassed by the drunken obnoxious fans. It's just my experiences, but I never felt I was in danger of anything physical at WVU.

That being said... there are some legitimately disturbing situations others have faced, so I can't discount the concerns completely.

Could you imagine being a college AD and having to deal with these types of emails, comments daily? I'm not saying you aren't coming from a good place, but my goodness these poor people have to be the thickest-skinned professionals on the planet.

I think that is sort of what I was alluding too. If you are with a group of friends, it's easy to laugh off. If you are there with your family, it gets awkward. A guy in my face screaming "eat sh*t Pitt" and "F You" isn't that big of a deal if im with a couple of my friends, it's weird if im with my kids. And that's the problem, a lot of the wvu faithful don't have that "filter"

It is pretty awful/weird if you aren't college kids, whether you are with the family/women or just the guys. Even those guys in college were the ones who people were embarrassed by and avoided, in my experience. Happy to end a fight/altercation, but if there are people like that looking for one? A decent school should be doing everything they can to push those people out of their fanbase and off their campus. WVU doesn't care and seems to embrace them.

OK here I go I'm going into the heart of Mountaineer County wish me luck.Ill admit I'm in full camo with my face painted so maybe they'll think I'm one of their own and leave me alone!!!

Sounds good. Put some of that "black-out wax" on your teeth, and keep whistling the "Dueling Banjos" song (from "Deliverance"), and you've got a shot. ;)

JD the reason for the post was Barnes does not list an e-mail address to allow you to express your concerns directly to him. I wrote the post upon hearing at the Pitt - Va game that the insanity of the WVU fans goes beyond their hatred for Pitt. That due to fan behavior another long time rival refuses to play them in VA TECH.
There is no room in college athletics for fans like them and they don't deserve a place on our schedule.

I agree 100% with Spineless there would be 1,000s of ignorant fans at a Wvu Vs Pitt football game!
WVU morons are the spineless ones to smash windshields while you are at the game as I described.

Well.........yeah. I have seen it all. I was at the WVU/VT game that ended that series for the time being in Morgantown. It was brutal, tear gas had to be brought out, that was the year VT was going to leave the Big East.

I was at 13-9. Alot of basketball games. Yeah, they are interesting folks to be sure. But again, I have said this alot, they are horrible winners, but humble losers. You beat them (like 13-9) and they tuck their tales and stroll out in shock. If they win, they want to burn, rape, pillage, etc.....

Weird.

I will always give WVU fans credit for being genuine. They love their state and love WVU.

My son used to train for football at the HIT Center in Morgantown when it was opened. There were mostly WVU kids there doing the training, my son would wear his Pitt gear to go train there. I asked him if he was crazy. He said no one is going to mess with him. I told him I wouldn't worry about someone messing with you, but you are going to have WVU athletes work you out and you are going to wear Pitt gear in front of them? I hope you are ready to puke. Needless to say, that was the last time he wore Pitt gear to the HIT Center!

The Snowflakeification of America rolls on....Maybe renewing the series in a designated safe space would be a satisfactory compromise...

hmm, the holier than thou we are better than you (even though we are like humans living within a couple hours drive) attitude of one rival over another (but hey we will put out some asinine you only play here disproportionately offer), now where have I heard that before?
