Anyone know how we are doing in terms of season ticket sales?

I've heard a ton of PSU fans have bought season tickets because it's almost cheaper to do that than get tickets for the one game. I'm wondering how much that has inflated the numbers. Just the other day my friend said he bought season tickets just for the one game, and he's a PSU fan.

We'll find out after the Marshall and Syracuse games.

I think they said we had a 93% renewal rate...but how many season tickets were sold last year?

Also, not ALL new season ticket purchases are by psu fans, but at least half probably are.

Per AD Scott Barnes during an interview this past Monday 6/27 looks like they expect to sell approx. 55K full season tix when the remainder of the student tix are sold as expected - plus additional min-plans (entire PP-G interview transcript linked):

SCOTT BARNES: When you think about the momentum that's been created with coach Narduzzi, our ticket office and the Panther Nation. We're excited to announce some new ticket numbers. Many of you will recall that we had a goal, a loft goal, of setting all-time records for season tickets. To do that, two main cornerstones. One was to hit a 93 percent renewal rate, and right now we have hit and slightly exceeded that at 30,065 tickets that have been renewed. That's 93 percent.

The other component to this was to try and sell close to 10,000 new season tickets. Our actual goal — although we talked about 10,000 — our actual goal was 9,790. Currently, to date, we're at 10,389 for our new season-ticket count. When you add what we call comps — they're really paid for — the sponsorship, car dealers, other supporters who buy them, there's another 4,035 tickets there. The total there without student tickets thus far is 44,489. If you add current student tickets, we have currently sold 5,768 on student tickets. Keep in mind, our goal there is to sell 10,000. We've done that over the last four or five years. We think we'll exceed that number. We don't want to rest on our laurels, but we feel really confident in selling out of our season tickets for students at 10,000. Current total is 50,257. Obviously, once we sell the allotment of student tickets, we'll have set a new record.

No shows by Pitt fans are common, so I think it's going to be pretty hard to determine if empty seats are Pitt fans or PSU fans buying them for 1 game.

True but, for the purposes of the attendance discussion, those games matter more than a game like psu, which ends up being an aberration and artificially inflates numbers.

The only way to consistently avoid empty seats is to have fewer of them, at a higher price.

Can't disagree, but I think it will be impossible to point to who actually bought the ticket. I suspect there was a % of casual Pitt fans who bought season tickets potentially just for that game too, not just PSU fans.

its the only way to get them right now.

Given the relative low price of our tickets, it would be interesting to know how many are owned by scalpers. There are seats next to my tickets that have been scalped or sold on Stubhub every game for 5+ years and never have the same people sitting in them. I checked with the Pitt ticket office to request to add those seats to my group of season tickets and they confirmed they are owned by someone and renewed each year. The seats are almost always empty for the cupcake games and filled for the better games.

I doubt there is much profitability in the majority of the upper bowl for scalpers to continue to renew, but they are making money on current lower bowl seat pricing and re-sale to make it worthwhile to renew every year.

Hear you. Thing is Pitt - like every other school - can only sell the tickets once. After that the person that buys them can do as they please with them. The Internet has made after market sales simple for those folks that are looking to broker tickets.

If Pitt can sell 55K or more in season tickets they've done a helluva job. Hope the vast majority then actually show up for the games. We'll see.

Add in the beer sales - we're rich I tell you, rich!!!!!!!

So of the 10,500 new tickets... I'd venture to say at least 75% of those are PSU fans buying season tickets.

Should we send them a thank you letter for supporting Pitt athletics?

Since you are so interested in PS fans and tickets to the game against them, according to
PS people they received a very small allotment from Pitt (3k).

Who cares who bought the tickets?
Why would PSU fans buy full season packages to get Pitt/PSU tickets when they can buy partial plans? When they can buy them off of any re-sale websitr like stubhub? When they can buy them probably for face or slightly above face value from a scalper?

Seriously... I know we joke about how dumb Penn state fans are but there just aren't any dumb enough to buy season tickets to our games to go to one game that they can buy tickets off scalpers for.
After all, regardless of the school it is still a college education. I would doubt seriously there are more than maybe 100 people that possibly did this. Seriously seriously doubt it. I remember people saying this about notre Dame and then going to the game to hardly see any notre Dame fans there at all. It's just a big game and more Pitt fans will roll out to support it.

Because currently it is cheaper just to buy the entire season then the mini pack or off of stub hub. Most people also prefer to head to the game with ticket in hand rather than deal with scalper especially if you have a large group who wants to sit together.

You can get season tickets for $147 or the cheapest plan with Penn State, Villanova and Marshall for $151. The cheapest pair of tickets on stub hub is currently $173 So not only are season tickets cheaper put you have more games to sell to recoup the cost. To get them through Penn State you must have donated $50,000 and you are limited to two tickets at $95 a piece.

When your tickets are dirt cheap why not? They season tickets are cheaper then tickets through resale. Most people prefer to have tickets on hand and not have to deal with scalper. At $147 they are dirt cheap. Sell the other 6 games for $10 a piece in your in for a total of $87.

I was going to buy season tickets at Penn state so we could go for next year, but then I remembered that the only time for over half a decade psu has sold out is when they have Ohio state fans buy up their tickets. I remember all of the games where the beav was filled every other row, so I figured plenty of cheap tickets in good locations will be available for next year

I'm sure 8,000 penn state fans care enough about $20 in price difference to buy 7 game tickets that they then have to deal with vs just biying 1 game ticket.

I hope there will be many ups fans at the game.

Or like most fans, they are waiting for single game tickets to go on sale since there will be 15K or so of those.

I dont doubt a few thousand PSU fans bought season tickets or a mini plan but we've heard for years how much more this game means to Pitt so dont you think more casual Pitt fans havr gobbled up some new season tickets and mini plans.

Attendance will be:

10K Pitt students
40K Pitt regular fans
17K PSU fans

Well there is one born every minute. I guess most of those do go to Penn state for school.

You could buy tickets for 20 bucks at the game but ok...
