Can anyone win here?

Unless Pitt breaks the bank for an Urban Meyer type. ...

Can a fast rising assistant or successful head coach from a lower level come to Pitt and turn the program into a 9 win type school?

Or......is any future candidate doomed?

The recruiting base is average . the fanbase sucks. the local media takes shots whenever available . ....

Who could turn this around?

doubtful

two highly regarded assistants gave it a shot and so far the results are mediocre.

the evidence is mounting that even with the ACC membership and an alleged commitment to football, its still a dumpster fire.

I hope everyone knows we would've kept winning under wanny. He had a down year with a sophomore tino. Nobody wants to admit it, but wanny was that close to turning the corner and it would have happened.

On a bright note, I think narduzzi still will get us even further ahead of that when he can get some actual talent here. So yeah, I think it's insane to think nobody can win here. We've just had the misfortune of hiring the wrong guy almost every time, minus Walt, wanny, and hopefully narduzzi.

Nothing in his history indicates he'd have righted the ship.
He started the slide

Who started it...wanny? Personally I think fraud graham is pretty much reasons 1, 2, and 3 we went downhill. 1 year and all he did was bring in guys that were useless to the next staff for the most part.

Over-reactive?

It seems to me that given the past 30 years it's a rather relevant and pertinant question

And because one poster likes the topic of discussion, you call it overreacting?

Any pitt fan that is realistic about this program should at the very least consider the question of whether anyone could actually win here.

Yes. We can absolutely have winning here. This was the same negative opinion that permeates in the mid 90's with the basketball team till we got a solid coaching staff, with a great system, who created a stable program.

If you tell yourself that enough times you might even be able to convince yourself that it's true. Probably not anyone else, but at least you'll believe it.

As things stand currently in the world of college football, no. Let's remember how briefly Pitt got into a the national spotlight. Pitt brought in Majors and Sherril (opened up southern talent when the SEC was not the monster it is today), left the four school arrangement limiting scholarships to 25) and brought in like 100 recruits (no NCAA limitations like now), got rid of language requirement and we had a huge structural advantage.
Unless we can be a recruiting force in the south, CA, TX, we're doomed to mediocrity. Only way I see turning it around: Hire HC with heavy recruiting ties to the noted areas who has a proven record of turning things around: mike leech at WSU, Ed Obregon at LSU, Briles formerly of Baylor. Not character guys, I concede. But you asked.

More wins mean more fans, and the media takes shots because THEY CAN, because they DESERVE to be ripped. So have a 9-3 or 10-2 season and things will turn around.
