Should Pitt accept a CBI invite if no NIT

WVU went last year at 14-20 and went.

I know most of you will say "no." But the games are mostly all on TV now and watching Pitt is better than not watching Pitt.

I would absolutely like to see them extend the season. A 4 game run, even against inferior teams, would be much more useful for a young team than playing pick-up. Yea, it sucks you have to buy home games and nobody will go but we already do that in November and December so I dont see that as the big deterrent.

Jeff Capel has said on several occasions he will do what is best for his program (not referencing CBI obviously) and that's all that matters. He doesn't care what the outside thinks in regards to scheduling especially. If he thinks its best for the program, he'll accept. But hopefully we can make the NIT.

I don't think they will accept it and I don't think it would help us if they did. We are what we are. The reason Pitt should be better next year is because we're getting better players. There's nothing to be gained by trotting out Hamilton and Murphy against low-majors.

Let the players rest and then get them back into strength and conditioning.

Correct answer. The CBI is not a tournament; it is a joke.

Yes, no substitute for gaining experience. Traveling, different venues, different styles of play and the possibility of winning which would give this team some much needed confidence.

The only real candidates to benefit from it are Drumgoole and Coulibaly, so probably depends on how important you view them to be for next year.

The rest of the team is plenty experienced and used to playing together against P5 competition.

I'd probably even request to be a "road-only" team. We wouldn't have to lose money on the home games plus we can gain confidence by hopefully winning on the road even if its against inferior teams.

BTW, Duquesne is no lock for the NIT. How much fun would a 3 game CBI Championship Series be between Pitt and Duquesne? That would be so awesome and might generate the most local buzz for Pitt basketball games in recent years.

I see no reason why not. It's more basketball for a young team, more exposure (yeah, it's not the NCAAT or NIT but it's on TV and people will watch it) and it would be a reward for some kids who've worked very hard the last 2 years.

I recall reading (or hearing) somewhere that ACC teams can't play in the CBI -- as in there is a conference rule against it.

The only ACC team to ever play in the CBI was Virginia in the first year of the event.

Well.....as a young team, sure. What I don't like is this counting against your record. I mean Jamie "won" over 20 games the year we won the CBI, but we didn't have close to 20 wins going in.....

SMF. Do you realize you are borderline Schizophrenic. One day we are on the NCAA bubble. Next day we are NIT shoe ins. Now you are talking CBI.

My advice. Settle down and let it play out. Your overreaction to every win or loss is maddening.

I doubt it. Its a money loser. Pitt's hemming and hawing about games at PPG cause of money.

It boggles my mind how some of you cant differentiate posts which state what we have to do to make said tournament versus prediction posts. I have never predicted anything except 16-15, 7-13.

This team is technically alive for the NCAAT (need to go 7-1 or 6-2 if we win at FSU) and the NIT (need to 4-4)

I think that's more of a "we thumb our noses at that" unwritten understanding. If Capel wants to play in it, he will.

Well ... even if it’s unwritten, no ACC team has played in the CBI since 2008 so I think it’s highly, highly unlikely that Capel would ever buck the trend.

Only if a smoother route to storm the court is in place.

The Pittsburgh media will frown on it but didn't call out st penn or wvcc for past participation in the CBI. Total double standard

Absolutely, that would give me games to watch, I'd watch that over the actual Final 4 if it was on at the same time. Just any extra games that I could care about I say YES to.

Anytime you have a young team and can get more practice/game experience, you should take it. I’m not as concerned with no NIT this year, but anything less than an NIT berth next year would be a big step backwards. Get the kids more game experience and practice time. We need the freshman to hit the ground running next year as legitimate contributors from day 1

For sure, I'd much rather watch a Pitt game in the CBI over the National Championship

For sure! I was wondering if anyone else feels that way? Like I watched Pitt's Quick Lane Bowl twice, I DVRed it. But didn't stay up to watch the NC game, because I didn't care who won.

the acc does not all its members to accept cbi bids.

another dumb uninformed thread by the op

Strawman statement seeing as they would never be played at the same time.

Just saying "IF". I remember one year Alabama and Auburn I think it was where ranked #1 and #2 in football, playing directly opposite to Pitt (4-5) playing Cincy in the snow, I watched every minute of the Pitt game.

did i just see that schools actually pay money to get into the CBI? Up to 40k to host a CBI game in the first round? Please tell me i read that wrong..

Yep. You have to buy home games just like in the regular season. WVU actually drew 13,000 for 2 games last season so they probably made money. I'm not sure we drew more than 4000 combined for our 4 games in 2011 but I enjoyed it. I dont like these outsourced for-profit tournaments or bowl games but its better than the alternative.

No question I would too. For me Pitt is the #1 priority. Watching the Nits hoping they lose is #2
