I was talking to a PSU friend of mine and he said he liked the uniforms as he was switching back and forth between that and the PSU game with his "divided" family but he said something that I never really considered. He said when Pitt wore those uniforms back in the day, you knew you were watching Pitt and that Navy blue and gold didn't set Pitt apart since many schools have the same combo.

ND, GT, and Navy all wear Navy blue and gold. Cal and WVU wear Navy blue and yellow. Nobody wears royal blue and yellow. In the NBA, the Warriors wear it and in the NHL, the Sabres do (if they still do, not sure), and in 1-AA, McNeese State does, so when you talk about branding, the royal and yellow would kind of define Pitt.

I've always been a fan of navy blue and gold but I'm starting to come around to the idea that maybe we should go back to royal and yellow to set outselves apart.

SMF you had to talk to a PSU fan for that. Go back into my posts I have been saying that for years. The old gold and blue makes them look like everybody else.
After last weeks game I posted the same thing even mentioning that Georgia Tech even changed from it. if you remember they used to have old gold helmets with a blue GT on the side. Now they have the white beehive helmets which I think is nice and defiantly different.
As much as we dislike PSU you know who they are when they take the field. And it may be possible that McNeese state made their uniforms to reflect the old winning Pitt teams (or maybe not). Iowa changed their style to look like the winning Steelers of the 70's and they stand out.
The yellow and blue is synonymous wit Pitt and it's winning tradition (notice most of the retired numbers and HOF players) and the other with the forgettable years (and multiple coaching changes).
How do you think the team, and players want to be remembered. Maybe they should start the new winning tradition by going back to the old winning traditional look.

I am not a big fan of the "cookie Cutter" dark blue that we and 50% of every program seem to have in our uniform but we are at least getting to some flexibility here, some variety. I think we could see these "throwbacks" one more time this year. No need to do anything "permanently"

I still think we should use the official colors, close to that of my logo, but the royal and yellow is better then the muted and boring colors we are currently wearing. There is a reason the players almost always choose to NOT wear the "gold" pants. It's because they are not distinctive nor are the very nice.

Unfortunately, I don;t see a change anytime soon. They doubled down on the current color scheme and won't change.

but the official colors are not the colors in your logo.. The "new" official colors anyways.. I don't necessarily disagree with you, just saying.. The problem is, the "official" gold, that pantone 4515 or whatever it is, the one that was designated by the school, that is not used in our unis, not even close. I get that fabric might effect the color a tad but the gold in our pants is not even in the same ballpark as our official gold..

Colors: Navy Blue (Pantone 289) & Gold (Pantone 4515)

I like the look of the uniforms, but I'm definitely not buying bright blue and yellow clothing to wear anytime soon.

I feel fortunate growing up in West/Central PA rooting for the Steelers, Pirates, etc. I can't imagine being an avid follower of some team that required me to wear teal, orange, or some other obnoxious color combination.

well you are entitled to your opinion. I can tell you that these new unis are not selling, at all. A jersey sold to the public, the one that we saw last Saturday, would fly off the shelves. NOt many people want that "Cookie cutter" navy blue jersey that we are seeing now.. But hey, to each his own..

I'm only for this if there's an updated matte royal blue helmet to go along with the classic yellow helmet and the new font of numerals remains the same. I really like that new font. Actually, that'd look pretty sharp. Catherdral styled numerals with royal blue and yellow and stripes on the pants. I'd continue to have three variations of pants as well, but of course, will a stripe on them.

All that said, I can't wait to see the matte blue, blue jersey and gold pants combo. Hopefully they sport it on Thursday night v. VT. And, my current favorite Pitt combo is what was worn at UNC. Blue helmet, white shirt and blue pants. That's an outstanding modern look.

By official I mean "old gold". Pitt can change the "official" colors all they want, but that doesn't change what people already know. Just like Steelers fans won't change their view of what the Steelers colors are even if the team changes to Vegas gold.

You are right, the "gold" on the unis are not a match of Pitt's Pantone 4515. Like has been said on here for 20 years now, Pitt makes incredibly simple things seem very difficult.

Oh, and, if anything, I'd really prefer the shade of blue and gold Pitt sported with Billy West. Just make the facemask grew instead of white. And, as I mentioned, update the numerals to what they are now. I love the current stripes on the shoulder with the new combos. Just add 'em to the pants as well.

Come on, man, PSU never wears blue pants or blue helmets. It looks great. I'm with everyone else in regards to burning the white pants and adding a gold stripe to the blue pants and a blue stripe to the gold pants. Otherwise, what's pictured above looks awesome.

I understand that they're going to wear the gold helmets this week. For me, I'd like to see that packaged with the blue pants but I have an odd feeling they'll sport the white or gold pants instead.

again, I think you and I would be in agreement with what we want to see. Not getting your steeler comparison though, they've been consistent with their gold/yellow. Pitt has changed so many times that you cant realistically even say what Pitt's gold is, we've had so many versions. Hell, I saw a pic of Fralic in a Pitt game where he was wearing a completely different jersey than the lineman next to him. We aren't even wearing same unis in the same game..

No idea. Where is the sales info?
at the games. Look around, no one is wearing them. Was at dicks last night, one rack of them, again, no one wants one.. I see these china knockoffs more so than the new jerseys.. Very telling that we come out with brand new jersey and no one wants one..

It will be interesting to hear the excuses for this. The unis are a big dud, imo. I'm sure the fans will be blamed, but in reality Pitt dropped the ball, again. It should be SOOOOOOOO easy.

I don't know. I do really like them. I just wish the pants had a stripe in the styling of the numerals. That's my one big qualm.

But, yeah, I've never been one to buy a Pitt jersey. To think of it, I've never owned a Pitt jersey, Steeler jersey, etc. I've only ever owned one jersey... Barry Sanders.

I was at dicks last night, looking for a Pitt palm basketball, I know im 40, it depresses me too. Anyways, saw a rack of them and was gonna buy one for my little man (he's 4) but I have an older one, 28 mesh jersey that is practically the same thing, same colors (was his older sister's a few years back) and figured, why buy the same thing..

A jersey that we wore last week, I'd drop 150 no problem for that jersey.. But of course we are under Nike so we wont see these til 2025 because that's how long it takes I guess..

I think the hoop jersey that's navy with the giant gold script on it will sell best of any Pitt jersey. Just looks great and prominently displays script in gold.

What is more likely to happen in 2025 is that a new regime feels the urge to put his/her touch on things, and we get yet another 'new' uniform with some justification for the design (cathedral/limestone texture/Pittsburgh seal/steel/medical syringe?/etc).

Making the easy seem difficult since... ?

OT: Im real happy the Pens dumped Vegas Gold this year after the last 15 years or so. Back to Pittsburgh Gold, and this white Jersey might be the most beautiful jersey in all of sports. Dont ever change it again.

Not sure who approved the throw backs but they got it right. Maybe the focus group the Barnes put together was part of it...not sure

I liked the royal blue Pitt wore in the GT game, they were a step in the right direction. Some have said the new unis made Pitt distinctly different from other programs (Navy, ND, etc) . I remember back to the Tony D and Danny M days Pitt was not mistaken for any other team because of the distinctive old gold of the helmets (mustard) with the royal blue jersey.
Lets hope Pitt makes the complete transformation and adopts the old gold jersey stripes and the old gold helmets of the 76 national champion team.
Hail to Pitt !

Every time I looked away and then back at the field last Saturday, I mentally pinched myself and said, "That's Pitt down there!" It seemed startling and exciting to not see some generic version of Pitt. Colors are close enough to be exclusively identified as Pitt. Hated the soulless PSU all white practice uniforms. The matte helmets look like primer, awaiting a color coat. JMO

The throwback colors were too bright but the look was classic. Tone down the gold to butterscotch and darken the blue just a little and you'd have something more in line with the glory years. Last week's colors were from 1987-1992. Pitt isn't San Jose State.

Actually Pitt has finally nailed it....Branding is consistent across all teams and signage.....Throw in the throwbacks, which people get out the KY and rubber gloves for, a few times a year and you have a brand and a purpose

They can sport the beloved look for most home games if they want. Bigger deal for me is adding stripes to the pants of the new uniform combos.

I literally just voted to keep navy blue and your post changed my mind. Good point
