I remember the article when the Pete was named said something like the Petersen's gave a large donation to athletics and then Steve Pederson surprised them by naming the arena after them. Inotherwords, they didn't buy the naming rights or make a gift with for the naming rights. It was just done as a thank you to them for a large gift.

Considering the terrible financial shape that Heather left us in, I think it may be time to sell the naming rights. I doubt there's any contract in place giving the Petersens lifetime naming rights and we can find another way to honor them like John & Gertrude Petersen Court. But it should be UPMC Arena or Heinz Arena or PNC Pavilion.

It's hard to say how much we'd get for it. The Carolina Hurricanes (where NC State plays) got $6 million/year for 10 years. Its bigger and 2 teams play there. You'd think we can get $2 million per year. Every little bit helps.

The answer is yes. The Pete also hosts concerts and other events so the University should be able to get at least $1-1.5 million per year if it wanted to go that route. There’s a lot of secrecy around the AAVs on these college naming rights deals so comps are hard to find, but 7 figures isn’t unreasonable.

Rename it the O and then have wiz Khalifa sing "take em to the o o o o o o o o o o ."

Yea. $1-$2 million per year sounds right and there's a good chance UPMC buys it and UPMC Arena or the UPMC Events Center has a nice ring to it.

It is already named for a donor, not the former AD. He was an Erie Insurance executive. You would have to sell the naming rights to the floor.

Better yet, let’s sell the naming rights to the fictional on campus stadium.

They can't sell the name to the arena, but they can and should try to sell the name to the court. But you have to have parties interested in pay the right price for the rights.

Renaming the arena would discourage other donors who might be interested in naming rights of buildings and schools, of which many opportunities are available, including the medical school. In fact, you have Trees Hall named after Joseph Trees, who originally gave money to build Trees gymnasium which is long since torn down. These sorts of donations are understood to be for perpetuity.

Seems odd that Pitt hasn't gotten a taker yet on naming the med school, dental, or pharmacy schools. You also have two major buildings that also could bring in big bucks: Cathedral of Learning and the William Pitt Union.
