Sibande says he’s coming back

So what is the realistic end goal if Capel returns?
A 17-15 record next year and hope to sneak into the NIT. Then we will end up losing almost every key contributor from that team and be left with nothing because the Fr. and So. classes are bare.
Transfer portal is the name of the game now. Heard Capel will return next season and please don't shoot the messenger thx.

Let’s face it …. If Sibande and Horton played the whole year we would have 4-6 more wins at this point. This is a positive development.
Right. The new coach will be starting with at least four roster spots filled.

Nike, Horton, Burton and Oladapo.

Only 9 to fill.

I get that the transfer portal is the latest and greatest reason for unsubstantiated optimism, but why would Pitt attract better transfers than the other 14 schools in the conference? They all have it at their disposal, too, you know. And Capel has proven that he is now the worst recruiter of high school talent in the ACC, so why are we going to go out and land better transfers than our competition? Makes very little sense to me.

If he does I will have 0 Hope left that anything ever gets better within this hoops program

Why? He has 1 year left. What further harm could Capel do next year? We would likely be better next year than if a MM coach in Year 1 of a total rebuild. If Capel sucks next year, he's done and you get your MM coach and its back to greatness. You can wait a year.

This is exactly right. And say we do go 17-15 and squeak into the NIT... What's the next move? Do we hope to attract a few more mid-major transfers who can hopefully do the same thing?

It's not just about sucking in year four. It's the fact we have zero foundation to this thing. Next year will be year five. He'll have four or five losing seasons in the books and likely zero young building blocks for the future with any game experience. I just don't see what the overall direction of this thing is. Are we play with just slapping a MASH unit together every season?

If he makes the NIT and returns Hugley and like 2-3 starters, I say he may get another year. Basically its this simple for Capel. He gets to ride out this current group IF he is making progress. He does NOT get another rebuild. If we go 9-11 in the ACC this year but everyone leaves, he's gone

I told you this over a month ago
Capel will be back .
Team is playing hard -
They are limited and he needs to address that - but they are playing as well as they can

Splendid!! We are paying him 3.53 million dollars to go 8-12 in year 4 for trying hard. Maybe we can put the Participation Trophy next to the BE Championship in the trophy case.

We're in a rebuild now; we're just not building anything. Hugley will be long gone before this team has a chance to do anything significant. We are going to have a bunch of upperclassmen and Nate Santos next year. Where's the future in that?

Waaah
Write bigger checks
Or any check
Start acting and stop whining
LOL, the biggest whiners are those who think that the programs' primary problem is it's fans and donors. Pitt puts a crappy product on the floor and then expects people to support it. It's not the donors who hired Capel, nor did they extend his contract. Giving money to people who don't make good use of it is simply stupid. But feel free to make your contribution to the bottomless pit basketball fund.

Really wish Capel made an assistant change a year or two ago. Capel needs to recruit the portal and every position lol.

I will
Because that’s what pays the bills - and gives a fighting chance at relevance
Squeezing your wallet right and whining anonymously on the internet is not .
Wake the fux up

By the looks of the empty arena nobody is writing checks to Pitt basketball. I’m sure bringing him back will help solve that problem.
Is there a comma In your check , or are ya waiting for a hero to do the heavy lifting while whining on the internet ?
I’m tired of this entitled bs

The future is next year. Its pretty much NCAAT or a gig on ACCN if not.

Capel's gonna be back no matter what, IMO. We have some pieces. He's gonna have to do well again on the transfer market. But if he were canned the whole roster would be blown up, including losing Hugley, and any new coach would be starting from an even worse position. If I'm Lyke, though, I pressure for some staff changes to get a really good recruiter on board.

After six losing seasons in a row, they're not going to fire him if he goes 18-15 or something and makes the NIT. The problem is we're just kicking the can down the road.

Had the Capel hire not immediately proceeded Stallings, I don't think there would be a single defender of the idea of retaining him left.

Its all or nothing for Capel in 22-23. He REALLY needs to hire a package deal coach like perhaps getting Jamie's assistant who delivers the Miller brothers (not those ones 😀). Hiring any random assistant for 1 year is kinda pointless. He needs a package deal dude.

If he loses all his good players, they are. Capel does NOT get a 3rd rebuild here. Its ride or die with this current core.

The problem is, there is no sitting college assistant (like Jamie McNeilly) who is willing to go to a program on their last legs.

I disagree.

16-17
8-24
14-19
16-17
10-12
13-19 (estimating this year's final record)

If we go 18-15 or 19-14 next year, he's coming back. Not too many coaches are getting axed after posting a program's best record and first postseason appearance in seven years.

... and then we'll very likely be right back to 12-21 (or worse) the following year, because Burton, Sibande, Horton, and probably Hugley will all be gone. So if we don't fire him after this year we're basically just counting down to the inevitable after the '23-'24 season. One high school recruit in these past two classes will be his undoing.

I guess it's all a matter of how soon they want to try to build a decent program again. Either after this year or two years down the road.

Hugley is likely gone after this year. Capel would have to haul in a monster class for next year, which he isn't, and get a top tier player or 2 from the portal, which he won't. Him and his staff are just not good recruiters.

Saying this year he'll get to 13 wins is very optimistic, even with Horton returning to the lineup. Our schedule will be significantly more difficult in February than it has been to this point and Horton hasn't been great on defense. He may give up more points than he creates in some games. So I think the ceiling for Capel for total wins this year is 11. He may not get to 10 wins. Next year is another story and could be a lot worse.

Doesn’t someone get any kind of props for Burton & Mo? Mo may have option$ after improving this season. It may help Capel in the portal market. Can’t hurt.

I give Capel credit for pursuing and securing Burton. I think Burton was always a pretty good player.

I think Capel took Gueye purely out of desperation. I do given Capel credit for bringing out what was in there, but previously untapped.

No one is coming to Pitt under Capel, if Hugley does not return. I see no wayHugley returns. He will have many lucrative offers and be able to select a successful program and play in the Tournament.

Personally, I believe Big John stays if Capel stays but I have no particular information on which to base this opinion.
