Sibande says he’s coming back

There is no way as in zero chance Nike Sibande would publicly announce in January that he would be returning next year unless

1) The chemistry of the current team is good and

2) The majority of the players are planning on returning to Pitt along with Jeff Capel

There is zero reason for Sibande to announce this publicly this early unless he and the team feel good about each other next year. I had heard he was leaning toward coming back, but he publicly announced it early. Could things change? Perhaps, but it is highly unlikely. The majority of the team is going to return.

I give Capel credit for pursuing and secure ing Burton. I think Burton wins always a pretty good player.

I think Capel took Gueye purely out of desperation. I do given Capel credit for bringing out what was in there, but previously untapped.

No one is coming to Pitt under Capel, if Hugley does not return. I see no wayHugley returns. He will have many lucrative offers and be able to select a successful program and play in the Tournament.
Also, I don’t think it’s particularly “fair” to express Mo was taken out of desperation per se. Capel needed a big and got one. What is desperate about that? I believe it is fair to suggest that he’s been a much bigger piece than Capel expected, especially on the offensive end.

I don’t believe there is any reason to doubt the current chemistry of the team is good. This is actually fairly clear by most of their results. The issue is simply that we need better talent, and it is a little hard at the moment to see how that could improve in any significant way next year.

Nike announced he is returning “now” for the same reason Barnes announced his recruitment “now” and Burton and the Oakland Zoo habe a social media post that praise Capel’s energy ”now”.

Notice when each occured. clumsy attempts to create the illusion of imagined momentum,

Right, which at least makes me think there maybe something in the works, possible recruit? One can hope…

You can hope, but I think it is just desperate attempts to save one’s job.

I think after the next 4 games we will know if it has any chance.

He’s already transferred once, barely played last year and is 24 coming off an ACL. Doesnt his baby momma live in Pittsburgh?

I’m sure the chemistry of the team is great. Unfortunately this isn’t remember the Titans or the mighty ducks

Capel would cut him late in late recruiting if he could upgrade

Nike’s announcement already served Capel’s purpose.

There is zero reason for him to play college anymore unless he / the team / Capel thinks the team can win with him back. He could potentially play basketball somewhere else outside college or move on in life and do something else.

I also dont think Sibande is a great basketball player or a savior type player. He is a respectable player at the college level for what he has shown and he is good enough to be a rotation player on an NCAA Tournament team. With that said, he is absolutely without question significantly better than both Jeffress / Eze / Santos and that isn't debatable.

But isn’t it a good thing that Capel is trying to save his job. I agree that we will know soon enough if it has any chance. I will also acknowledge that Capel still has a long way to go to fairly demonstrate he should be retained.

Could just be leverage since they have leverage to lower the buyout as well.

If it was me, I would be doing anything to save my job. Pull out all the stops. Even put my brother on the block.

Truthfully speaking, I fully expect that next and soon. Leaving the program to pursue other endeavors.

You heard it here and first. Day one replacements already on staff.

I don’t think that’s true at all, Gary. I believe his success or demise will be with the guys who have gotten him this far. No point in moving on them now. Last year was the time.

Doesn’t someone get any kind of props for Burton & Mo? Mo may have option$ after improving this season. It may help Capel in the portal market. Can’t hurt.

Sure, he can have credit for bringing them in. But we're still a bad team even with them here, and one will be gone soon, so I don't see how building through the portal every year is a viable solution.

Seems like a lot of guesswork and chasing your own tail under that method.

I understand your point. I won’t try to predict the future.

If your desperate to save your job, you offer him up now to display your seriousness about being better.

Hoping to win enough to save your brother does not seem tenable. If Lyke would decide to keep Capel, I feel sure it would include “conditions”.

I understand this point as well, but this is also the reality with College Hoops right now I’m afraid. Additionally, the transfer portal is likely the same first step a new coach would use to improve the program.

The reality is winning two or three more games isn't going to do it. the ACC was down...this was their chance. Cuse, for example, is loaded w some players next year and has a top 15 class. Pitt has...noone. And that's by design. We just stopped recruiting everybody for some odd reason.

So you can get capel on some recruiting violations. That's business.

The results next year will be worst. The wins we had this year won't come easy next year. Losing Mo is not helpful. He was a diamond in the rough. The odds of hitting on a player like him again won't be good.

Then you lose Femi. He sucks but still.

Noone is gonna want to go on a sinking ship. Even of hugley comes back.

The Efton Reid recruitment just had to be dirty.

Hugley ends up at a school like LSU. Count on it.

The loyalty to Capel after his legal situation (should he even have been allowed back?), His HS Coach being friends with Capel, his friend Barnes committing (a year out, for what that’s worth) are nothing but wishing and hoping.

A NIL deal and a chance to play for a team in the tournament make his decision a no brainer.

That's another issue entirely.
The boosters arent going to help Pitt.
Pitt needs all the help they can get.

Sure, supplement through the portal all day. But that can't be the core of your team. Five players the equivalent of Mo (and he's one of the better transfers we've landed) going up against what a good ACC team used to be (I assume the conference won't be this bad forever) wouldn't give us a snowflake's chance in Hell at being competitive.

And say they get capel to lower buyout now. They won't be able to use it again. So there's that.

He’s trying to do the best he can , as anyone whose employed or has any pride in their work should do .

If he was ever inclined to mail it in it was this season , losing his two best ( and only ) perimeter players early with no bench could frustrate anyone . He wants to win a little more than we do .

Let's see how the season plays out but theres def a redline in expectations for the program.
