We've had a constant series of posts lamenting the lack of height in WPIAL basketball.

I saw the linked article below and had to post it. Steel Valley has a 6-10 kid and a 6-7 kid playing VOLLYBALL. Does anybody know if they played hoops? I know when my son played volleyball as a senior, many of the teams had some 6-6/6-7 kids, who were bigger than anybody he had played against in basketball. .

I play a lot of volleyball. In my opinion, it is a sport that is much less physically taxing that basketball or football. I can understand why kids would rather play that over a lot of other sports.

One of my son's friends was an excellent volleyball player at NA and got a full ride to Pepperdine. He was at least 6'8" and very athletic. I don't think he ever played hoops. I never thought about it, but I guess it is odd.

Well, at least it answers the question where all the local tall kids went.

My kids went to Elderton. The AD was also the volleyball coach., particularly for the girl's team. Girls were definitely steered towards volleyball instead of basketball.

One of the best big men at the ProAm was a volleyball player at Central Catholic in high school and went out for basketball at Gannon or Behrend. He ended up getting some time in the D League. 6-10 Kyle Goldschmidt or something like that? He had some good matchups against Fella and Gary McGhee and easily could have been a D-1 player with better early coaching.

For guys, at least, picking volleyball over hoops if you are tall doesn't make a whole lot of sense because it isn't following the $$ money potential.

Or is it? A lot easier to get a scholarship in volleyball potentially.

Again, kind of says volumes about the emphasis and commitment towards basketball in this area, doesn't it? Again, part of it, a lot of it, has to go back to the lack of a pro level franchise (look at hockey). But I do think basketball (like most sports but maybe moreso) is being way overcoached and not as much fun to play as it used to be.

Just because your tall doesn't necessarily mean you like to play bb. As crazy as parents and coaches can be that can turn off a lot of kids to an activity.

Back in the day, you didn't have much choice. If you were big, you played football. Tall, it was basketball. Whoever heard of high school volleyball 40 years ago?

There really aren't that many high schools that have a boys volleyball team. This year there are 21 AAA teams in the WPIAL and 17 AA teams. So that's what, around a third of WPIAL schools that play boys volleyball? There are far more girls volleyball teams in the WPIAL than there are boys teams.
