So Sad

Wow, the author really poked the bear with that one. "Groupthink" "Cult" "Creepy" Lol.

Truthfully that article could probably be born of the experience at any large monolithic state university. Though, I have always found that Penn Staters bragging about it being the number 1 campus for corporate recruiting an indictment. Of course corporations recruit there. The number one goal of corporations is the acquisition of conformity. I don't see that as a good thing…but lemmings find it boast worthy. Go figure.

The backlash from the blue and white masses will not be pleasant.

As much as I dislike PSU, I'm having a hard time sympathizing with this kid. While there is a certain level of truth to what he is saying, it is not unique to PSU. Provincialism, group think, conformity, etc - not uncommon at all in large companies, universities, towns, churches, etc. This kid made a mistake going to PSU but I find it hard to blame PSU for it. They are what they are and it isn't difficult for one to ascertain that PSU isn't the right choice for someone who wants to spread their wings and experience all sorts of academic, social, & ethnic diversity. I agree with him, PSU's goal is to educate you so that you can get a job and they do a fine job at it. If this kid wanted to experience all of the things that he felt he didn't get at PSU, he should've gone to school in NYC. Or better yet, go get a job for a while and grow up a bit. The kid sounds miserable and instead of holding himself accountable for his choices, he is blaming someone else. Hope all kids in his generation aren't like that.

It mentioned something about wearing Penn State clothes and not their own cloths. I mentioned this about two summers ago noticing a high number of Penn State fans at a Pirate game during a playoff run which I thought was weird. I have a ton of Pitt stuff I wear but not 7 days a week. It's just really weird to see Penn State people you know and see wear one, two, three Penn State articles of clothing at the same time. It's like a uniform for a citizen.

There is a difference between wearing things like a fan and having multiple items on at the same time for a large portion of your life like I notice with many Penn State fans. It's more than pride, it's crippling.

This kid sounds like he isn't fit for college or the traditional American workforce for that matter. Probably not PSU's fault... he may have had a similar experience at most colleges outside of an arts school. Some people just like to complain about stuff. This guy sounds like he would probably complain if they asked him to think too much outside of the box. Ultimately, this kid probably graduated with a 2.3 and is looking for someone to blame other than himself.

This is like someone eating an entire meal and then complaining and wanting a refund. We know there is nothing to do in Centre County except getting hammered and open mic night!

Well...one things for sure...going to Pitt I never had these feelings of having to conform...the only time my experience even remotely approached that was my time in the drumline...

It's often rated highly for corporate recruiting because it is the largest school in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic. It often swaps places with Arizona State in such rankings. No one is mistaking ASU as some bastion of academic excellence. These diploma mill schools are the one-stop shop Walmarts for those on the recruiting circuits. But hey, you have to have something to put on the school brochure next to THON.

I have 60% nitters in my family. I'm having a ball at family get togethers. They are starting to understand what a dope the "Carnival Barker" is.

Well said. If this person wanted diversity and to be personally challenged, she made a poor college choice. Penn State doesn't hide the ball when it comes to conformity (although some choose to call it "school spirit.") You only need to look out the window during your drive to Penn State to see the cornfields, and you only need to look around when you're there to see that it's a college town full of chain restaurants and T-shirt shops. Was she really surprised to find that State College isn't full of art galleries and museums? Finally, she compounded her poor choice by sticking around three years after any other person would have realized it was a bad choice. I can't lay this bad experience at Penn State's doorstep.

kind of sad that you would post that.... just a confused kid and not indicative of Penn State as a whole or differing from most other colleges... ....
