ESPN must be thrilled. Two unseeded teams in two of the smallest and least populated states in the country.

Marshall always seems to be able to get an early goal and then pack the box and defend. Vermont tied Denver 1-1 in the 84th minute and won on PKs.

we couldn't have had a better setup to win the damn thing. too bad we couldn't get it done against vermont.

LOL.....a personal Pitt nightmare. Hey, it is what you get for loving a sport that rewards passive play and pure luck.

It really is the most random of sports…which is why leagues around the world don’t have the types of playoffs we have in American sports. They have tables and reward the team with the best record…thus the best team wins every single year.

One solution in college I thought about is having a home and home two legged aggregate tie from the sweet 16 or elite 8 through the final. But that would take the tourney through Christmas and probably not ideal. Although it never stopped college football from playing into the new year.

They could have maybe done that if they made it a 2 semester sport like all the players and coaches wanted. The admins didnt want it, however as they said they couldn't staff college soccer in the spring so it was voted down.

There's not much you can do with the current setup. College soccer, in general, is incredibly balanced. If they limited foreign players, then I think you'd see the American kids cluster at the brand name schools and you'd see a wider talent gap but when schools like Marshall and Kansas City can recruit almost a full foreign roster, they arent at any disadvantage against the brand name teams. This is also how Pitt has gotten good.

No one would have watched #1 vs #2 so ESPN doesn't care.

Well, at least we lost to the champions. Vermont came from behind to tie the match 1-1 in the last 10 minutes and then won 2-1 in OT. Their foreign players were better than Marshall’s foreign players.

I'd like to see the NCAA put a limit on foreign players in soccer. Its almost impossible for an American HS kid to get a scholarship. But it levels the playing field so maybe that's a good thing. Soccer is the only sport where you can have schools like Vermont and Marshall competiting for a natty.

One of these years, Pitt will win one but the tournament is so random.
