Some detail on the Winston situation...

He's a MSU lock. Michigan was the only other possibility and it was a remote one. That;s why Beilein went ahead and took the bird in the hand by offering Simpson Saturday. Not landing Winston isn't really an indictment of Smoke, the kid has been close to Izzo and the MSU program for a long time, and Winston has been Izzo's #1 recruiting priority for a long time.
On top of that, Izzo is hosting Winston, his close friend Miles Bridges and a bunch of other elite recruits at the MSU vs Oregon football game Saturday night, that will be an electric atmosphere. He is also showing off MSU's brand new hoops practice facilities. MSU could very well end up with Bridges and Winston, which would give them the top recruiting class in the country--although I'd have to think Kentucky is a strong #1 for Bridges.
So if he is a MSU lock why list or evn mention other schools. Why not just say it and be done. My feelings are until they commit and actually until they sign you always have a chance. Remember the same was say about Pitt and Heron and look what happened with him. Also Pitt was that way wit Adams and he made a firm commitment and stuck to it, never mentioning other schools, even though a lot of experts said he could have gone somewhere else.
Nothing is a lock until a LOI is signed...but, certainly MSU is the heavy favorite.
Some folks want to get away, though.
Because they get paid travel to the school and wined and dined for a weekend.

That's the most stupid reason. You can commit and still take visits. No school will tell you no. I understand MSU is the front runner , but is it beyond (some) Pitt posters minds that we may really have a chance ? I agree with SOL nothing is concrete until it's signed. Everyday verbal"s change their minds.
I think the biggest reason recruits take these visits is due diligence. It's like test driving cars. Everyone starts with one favorite and a list of other contenders that they;re interested in for one reason or another. Then you may drive the same couple of cars 3-4 times before you settle on the one you originally wanted to buy. Choosing your basketball program is a far more important life decision.
That;s exactly what's going on with Winston.
Again, we aren't going to win this one. It has been decided for a long time, well before we even hired Smoke.
I believe this is completely true -- I think his choice has been MSU for a while, but it's a darn good idea to look at other schools very closely so that you can be sure it the right decision.
For Pitt's sake, we can only hope that something that has happened along the way to make consider a different decision.
@MattSteinbrink: Marlon Williamson has done a GREAT job with Cassius Winston. Has Pitt in the final two and has done everything he possibly can.
While it makes sense to visit other programs to make sure your making the best decision on your future I can't believe the wine( ing ) ,dining and PARTYING aspects of these trips can't be overlooked as a reason to take them even if your mind is made up. Does anyone really think that visiting Pitt would sway you away from either Mich. schools or Stanford ? If he's good enough to be a starter from day one at all these schools that negates the advantage Pitt could have because he'd certainly be the starter here next year.
Maybe he is the "player to be named later" in the deal that brought Narduzzi to Pitt.
If only.
He'll probably committ to MSU this weekend.
If he doesn't then we might have a shot.

That's where our timing kinda sucks, as MSU needs a PG next year as well, that spot will be Wimston's from Day 1. I can see this playing out differently if they were set at PG, but instead about 2 years ago Izzo literally made Winston his #1 recruiting priority for 2016. From what I've heard Izzo and the MSU coaches think Winston is one of the most gifted distributors to come out of the Michigan HS ranks in many years. He's uncanny with his passing and decision making, and very strong with the ball. Not the greatest athlete on earth but just a tremendous team player like Draymomd Green was at point forward for MSU. The engine that drives the bus.
Agree with this completely. To get us first runner up in a relatively short recruiting time frame was a feat, and frankly due 100% to Smoke's relationship with Wimston's dad and Wimston himself. That said, in recruiting there's no prize for second place.
Agreed, but we aren't in second place to the paperwork is signed. if verbals were everything herron and rowan would be at Pitt. As a matter of fact the majority of posters had rowan committed to Florida state or Louisville based on his dad's Adidas job. Why don't we stop believing gossip and rumor and wait till he signs. Then it's a done deal. And sometimes just being in the race helps you with other recruits who are watching and waiting.
