After disappointment over the heartbreaking loss, here are some thoughts that I can run by you guys:
1) Defense was very aggressive and physical the first half. You have to love the imprint that Narduzzi and Conklin are putting on this team. Blitzes, pressuring the QB and press coverage seem like a standard feature.
2) However, I felt that Iowa out-physicalled Pitt the second half. They ran the ball, ran through tackles, and Beathard escaped trouble countless times. Also, pressure on QB was noticeably less.
3) Pitt's OL provided decent protection, but wasn't effective in ground game. Pitt isn't what last year's running game was. Don't know if it is the loss of Conner, the OL new guys, or the scheme of Chaney.
4) Have to root for Voytik, class kid, hard worker and student of the game. But, simply does not have the arm that Peterman has. I thought Nate was gutsy till the end, even after the early Ints. The interception in the end zone on the second drive was a killer. But, he was effective the second half, and the quicker the offense gets, the better it looks.
5) Ollison ran well, but saw little PT at RB. Don't know why, but he seemed to run hard when given opps. Hall ran hard, but doesn't make people miss, and James had few opps. He has potential, hope he gets more.
6) Secondary did a decent job. Pitts got beat deep once, but overall it was the slant routes that hurt Pitt. Maddox and Whitehead tackled well and were physical.
7) Yelled 'oh no' when I saw they were not going for the 4th and inches. Had momentum there, gave it up, and Iowa scored soon after poor punt. Overall though, I thought preparation and coaching was solid.
8) Last drive was a great one. Offense responded well to score or lose situation.
9) Thank God for Tyler, as other WRs were not a factor. Didn't understand why Henderson or Tipton were not used to try to get them in open field.
10) Loved use of TEs in passing game. Holtz and Orndoff were big parts of game, and should be an important part of offense from now on.
Tough loss, but gave Pitt fans hope for a successful season. It was an exciting, intense game, that should keep fans looking ahead to the next one. Hope for a big win at VT. I think the Narduzzi era has gotten off to a hopeful start, with big things to come. HTP.
