Godfather Part III

a mafia movie that is sort of underrated, not in this category but not too far off is A Bronx Tale. One of the better lines, "Now you cant leave."

Should have been included in the original post. Immediately jumps to 2 on my list behind Godfather.

It starts and ends with The Godfather. Any other choice is just trying to show how clever you think you are in the face of the real truth.
No, The Godfather is idealized, like they where more sophisticated than they really where, I'd say Goodfellas and Sopranos is more like what they where.

Godfather, hands down. Michael carlione was made for pacino.

American Gangster was no where near these movies but still a very good movie with Denzel.

Godfather I and II are the "best", they're basically modern operas. Coppola took a trashy novel and turned it into cinematic classics.

But Goodfellas is my "favorite" of them -- it's sort of scary and powerful in its way because we know that is closer to who these actual wise guys were. These guys were a bunch of violent thugs and the movie shows that.

The no words rule is silly -- just use the poll function of the board next time!

As someone else stated - Godfather and it’s not even close. It’s rare to have one classic, it’s unheard of to have two.

They are all great, but in their own way, so it is really hard to rank.

Sopranos is awesome because of the character development and long range building and sentiment you attach to characters. If you have lived near that, it seems normal 3/4s of the time.

Godfather is cinematic and gripping with superb acting at almost every turn and almost a romance of the time and life.

Goodfellas gives a (seemingly) very realistic view of the turmoil and violence, but it is funny and unbelievably rewatchable, even if you catch it 1/3 of the way in.

Would Goodfellas and The Sopranos even have been made if not for the Godfather movies?

Goodfellas and The Sopranos were excellent, but the Godfather movies are legendary. 2 of the top 5 or 10 movies of all time. They created the genre.

Which genre did they create? I think it was more that it caused a rebirth of interest in mob movies. Mafia movies date to the pre-code era even -- Little Ceaser, The Public Enemy, and Scarface.

Goodfellas took on a very different tone from Godfather. Scorcese borrowed heavily from The Roaring Twenties (1939) and combined it with a French New Wave approach with the narration and fluid camera. It's the blue collar of mob movies in theme but the look is very unique too

untouchables and Donnie Brasco were two other really good mafia movies. I don't consider scarface a mafia movie, more of a gangster movie, a fine line sure but a difference none the less.

I hated casino. I think it was a good movie but Sharon stone's character annoys me so bad, it ruins the movie for me. the death scene with Pesci and his brother actually makes me feel a tad nauseous.

You're right. I couldn't think of any mafia movies off the top of my head that predated The Godfather when I made the genre comment. I should have done some research.

Calogio... "C"

"can you make sauce"
*Calogero

Interesting fact: The actor (Lillo Brancato) who played the older Calogero became a drug addict and went to prison for ~10 years, when he was caught in an armed robbery during which his accomplice shot and killed a police officer.

The younger one ended up like this:

surprised the older actor got in trouble, he was in some decent roles. The one with danny DeVito who taught a class in the army and I think he was in the submarine movie too, with denzel and Gene Hackman. limited role but still a decent movie.

EDIT:

actually, he's in quite a bit or roles and even did a few seasons on the sopranos. I don't remember that though. here is his bio on imdb.

All are great, and for different, subtle reasons. The only dud was Godfather III.

Francis Coppola's choice to have his daughter play the role of the Don's daughter was like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. The role called for an experienced actor who looked like an Italian goddess, but unfortunately she was neither.

Godfather
Goodfellas

Sopranos isn't even worth mentioning next to these films.

Re: Brando. He wasn't even the lead actor in The Godfather, yet he won Best Actor. Half the film he's recovering from being shot and has no lines. He should have been in the Supporting Actor category (and Pacino in the Lead)

PS: Enjoy this.

Totally agree regarding the Sopranos - I just laughed when I saw them listed.

This^^^ They are all so different. The only similarity is the mob.

Of those 8 acting credits 5 were movies. All 5 movies were nominated for the best picture oscar. The guy was a huge friend and mentor to Pacino, Duvall, Deniro, Walken and I believe was engaged to Meryl Streep.
This is an example of a guy who should get into a hall of fame with a short career. He wasn't a leading man type, but always had powerful roles.

But he was very lucky to draw these particular roles in these particular movies.
