Pac-12 to experiment with 15-minute halftimes

LOS ANGELES — Selected non-conference games broadcast on the Pac-12 Network will have fewer commercial breaks and reduced halftimes, conference Commissioner Larry Scott announced Wednesday.“We’ve worked with our universities on these proposed modifications and over the next few weeks, we’ll be finalizing exactly which games during the non-conference season we will be piloting,” Scott said during his introduction at the annual Pac-12 Media Days.Halftimes will be reduced to 15 minutes from 20. Scott said he spoke with coaches around the conference when looking into the matter.“I was delighted to hear our coaches feel like 20 minutes is more than you need from a student-athlete’s health and rest — and X’s and O’s — perspective,” Scott said.

I don't mind halftime, and 5 minutes isn't much of a changed for an entire game. It's the numerous commercial breaks that slows the games down to a crawl. They practically ruin national championship games now with the delays and total game time. Even an exciting finish is tarnished when people have fallen asleep.

Well the article states that they are exploring modified commercials as well. Ads running split screen while action continues.

I agree that 5 minutes less of halftime doesn't make a difference. The commercial breaks are really all you need to look at...well, that and the countless unnecessary replay reviews that plague college football.

Split screen? Argh. More than likely they will shorten halftime and add that extra 5 minutes into split screen commercial time, then tell fans the game is faster.

Here's an idea. All 5 major conference get together and agree on a format that is great for fans watching the games. That would mean fewer commercial breaks and a quicker game pace. If they end up with less money in ad revenue, then they are all in the same boat, but ideally more people would watch until the end and the revenue would still be there, or even more.

I'd like another 10 minutes... hardly enough time to eat..

Great! We don't need two band performances. Get back to the football. I am actually fine with running quick 15 second split screen commercials every few minutes, too. Much of football is 20-30 seconds of waiting on 5-10 seconds of action.

Exactly - that is the model to use.

This is actually a great idea. Perfect way to keep the flow of the game going and still getting the ad revenue.
