Most of us dont know much about SMU other than the Pony Express and the Death Penalty.

Couple interesting notes I've learned

- Some call it "Southern Millionaires University"

- It is not technically in Dallas. The university is in University Park, which is bordered on 3 sides by Dallas and the other side by Highland Park. University Park and Highland Park are 2 extremely affluent communties which is why SMU reminds me a lot of Villanova in many ways.

- In 2019, they disassociated with the United Methodist Church and are wholly owned by their own Board of Trustees. It doesn't even appear that its a religious school at all anymore.

they have disassociated themselves with UMC as many Methodist churches have recently in light of the recent acceptance of more liberal policies by the UMC. SMU is still religious but went with the more conservative movement.

  • Background
The UMC has faced conflict over potentially allowing ordained homosexuals and same-sex marriages in the church.

  • Departures
Since 2019, more than 7,000 congregations have received approval to leave the UMC, which is about a quarter of all Methodist churches in the U.S. Many of these congregations are joining the Global Methodist Church, a denomination created by conservatives who broke from the UMC. Others are going independent or joining different denominations.

SMU is technically in Dallas. Dallas is both the city and county.
There are those random little towns within not just the county of Dallas, but the city of it.
I use to live in Addison when I first got here. It’s in Dallas County. If you took one step in either direction while in Addison, you were back in the city of Dallas.

That’s how the area around SMU is. You’d never know you weren’t in the city anymore unless someone told you. And it’s only about 2 to 3 miles big.

Sounds like a nice place. Beats Trinity, huh?

University Park in incredible. The number of luxury homes in that area is just unreal. I'm guessing that most of them start at around $2 to $3 mil minimum.

Been there a number of times. I remember driving around University Park listening to the Joe Flacco Mike High Miracle game with my 1 year old while wifey was playing down the street in the Steinway Hall. Made it back to the hotel to see Justin Tucker end it in the 2nd OT.

It's absolutely in Dallas. There are quirky zoning laws here in the state of Texas - for instance, there is the City of Bellaire that sits in the heart of Houston.

This got me looking it up, and it appears fellow ACC members Syracuse and Duke are (or at least were) affiliated with United Methodists. I did not know that.

The exact opposite actually. They are leaving because they dont agree on the UMC's ban on "certain things."

I didnt realize this is still ongoing as it heada to the Texas Supreme Court. SMU wants to be done with the UMC and be totally independent. The UMC says "nope, cant do that."

I know there's some odd rules and boundaries but really it comes down to who you pay taxes to. Does Highland Park and University Park have their own governments, public schools, police forces, etc? Or are they just Dallas neighborhoods as Shadyside is to Pittsburgh.

Trinity may have nicer football facilities though. My God, what a waste. I still cant get over that. What's next? McGuffey to build a 10K seat basketball arena? Chartiers-Houston to build a retractable dome? That seems just as likely as an indoor football facility for one of the worst programs in the WPIAL historically in an area where a large number of people live in poverty.

McGuffey will spend it on a state of the art mat room.
