Tomlin vs Narduzzi

Compare and contrast

Defend one vs the other

Go…

Where do you want me to stick you with this long needle….in your rump or in your arm?
well I’ll start. They are the same guys, defensive gurus who struggle with defense. They don’t understand offense. They struggle at situational football. They struggle with time management. They have mediocre records over the past ten years. Each have a title.

Where they differ is Tomlin is articulate and has a degree of intelligence. Narduzzi comes across as a bumbling gym teacher.

Don’t disagree

One difference is one has limited resources and the other has ample resources to recruit and retain his best players.

I’d also submit that if you define articulate as throwing out dumb cliches I suppose that’s true

Bottom line is both fit the very definition of mediocrity. Most of Tomlins success was accomplished with the prior staffs players and coaches

Narduzzi would be a WPIAL gym teacher coach in another life. As that guy on Twitter said, "these guys don't deserve to be millionaires."

Tomlin
18 years
183-106-2
63.2 win %
8-10 in playoffs
44.4 playoff win %
11 playoff appearances
7 division championships
2 conference championships
1 Super Bowl

Narduzzi
10 years
72-56
56.3 win %
7 bowl appearances
2-5 bowl record
28.6 bowl win %
2 division championshiops
1 conference championshiop
0 CFP appearances

Both are defensive gurus stuck in their own ways. They rely on a 4-man pass rush far too often and when it doesn't work, the defense can turn into a disaster.

Neither coach understands the modern offense. Narduzzi at least took a leap when he hired Bell. Tomlin doesn't trust his young QBs and handicaps his own offense by limiting what they do.

Tomlin is loved by the media. Narduzzi is hated by the media.

Narduzzi maxed out his team and immediately stumbled and is having the worst stretch of his career. Tomlin, to his credit, won on the culture and talent established by Cowher and now has the longest stretch without a playoff win since prior to the 1970s.

I would take Tomlin over Narduzzi to coach Pitt in an instant, but both seem to be at or near the end of their tenures in terms of getting the most out of their respective teams.

Narduzzi should be a gym teacher in this life?

Tomlin should be Tony Robbins?

Tomlin’s record over the past 10 years would be interesting compared to Narduzzi.

One stat that’s profound is that Tomlin has 4 years of his 18 with a playoff win.

That’s pretty good. Blows Narduzzi away in that respect…considering Duzz has plenty of wins built into the schedule.

Narduzzi gets the nod for hiring better OCs with Canada (the college version) Whip and Bell. At least he tried to get some juice going.

Tomlin, with the hires of Mr. Farts in the Skillet, Canada and Smith has failed miserably there.

the comparisons between my two favorite football teams is getting scary. good and bad.. Same with the coaches..

Both cant hire an OC to save their life. but in all fairness, i give Duzzer the W on this cause he at least hired Canada who did get a better job (Lsu). Also he hired whipple who after 3 years, got promoted. And i think Bates was a good hire..

Tomlin has zero coaches ever get offered a better job, that's almost impossible.

I think both guys get the respect of their players for the most part. Both are terrible at "in game" strategies like making 1/2 time adjustments, play clock management, etc..

Tomlin has the media in his back pocket while Narduzzi alienates them.. i have my opinion on why the media walks on egg shells with Tomlin but we wont go there.. We all know it but most wont say it.

I love listening to Starkey on select Mondays after steeler losses. Dude goes off the rails with his anti-Tomlin stuff. It’s great entertainment. He’s the same way with Duzz, although not as much because it’s a Steeler town and that dominates the discussion.

He also gives tomlin props when it’s due.

But the point is, he’s not afraid to be objective.

I happen to be one who liked Coach Todd. But we know that he was foisted on Tomlin by Rooney.
