I happened to catch word of this one from Sue to the PSU football lettermen (link: http://onwardstate.com/2015/11/05/s...tate-lettermen-on-4th-anniversary-of-scandal/) from a post on the Temple board (significant there because the "50th anniversary" game she notes in the P. S. happens to be when Temple plays at Penn State). What is particularly galling is this passage:

"The sad history of this case is that the Board of Trustees took a terrible tragedy and made it worse. Their complete reliance on the deeply flawed Freeh report and their total capitulation to the NCAA were terrible mistakes that needlessly and recklessly tarnished the reputation of this great university."

Is that woman serious? THOSE actions needlessly and recklessly tarnished the reputation of that university? As if turning a blind eye to, enabling, and covering up for one of the worst pedophiles in recorded American history did not?

I despised Paterno and his blatant lying and hypocrisy.
But his wife is in a miserable situation. I ignore her comments about her husband. They are predictable and to be candid, they are to be expected. I feel badly for her.

Agree, there is no upside in talking down when a spouse loses another spouse, and Joe was as big hearten to Sue as Sue was strong for him and the entire family. I admire both of them and they made each other happy together.

There was a time when I said, if Joe Paterno did for Pitt what he did in building the Penn State Program, that is a Legacy that needs to be praised with thanks. Yet, after what that Legacy left at Penn State regarding just the Penn State Football Scandal 2012 Reforms, I retract that statement since the Legacy did shame Penn State Name during the Paterno Era and I would not want that for Pitt even with 409 Wins, but just an opinion.

On the other hand, as a Family Man, Husband, Father, and Grandfather there was never even a hint of scandal, weakness, doubt, or mistrusts with each other, and that says much to the credit of both of them respecting their love together.

I also felt Joe was confused what to do in 1998 when confronted Snadusky was under investigation, and Joe admitted in 2011 he should have done in 2001, when told by McQueary and regretted that to his grave. Still, I may have to change that opinion too, if more comes out from the Civil Lawsuits and there is substantial and verified evidence more knew on 1970-80s.

I still will separate Joe's Coaching and admire it versus from his Running the Program and not knowing when to retire and ignoring his old ways required change under New CFB Reforms, Educational Laws, Athletic Title IX, and NCAA Rules. as well as, Ref Guman, Approval and Banning Reporters, Non-Cooperation with University and Outside Legal Authorties, Snide and Back Handed Remarks of other Coaches, Schools, Players, and Recruits and the false slogans from "We ARE", "The Grand Experiment", "Success & Honor", and the "Penn State Way, that he did not all create but ignored the falsehoods about that aspect of the Program as well.

In the end, Penn State, Administrators, Trustees, Second Mile, and Joe were part of that blame for using they were true but knowing they were not and then thinking the promotion of Winning Football, Making Money, and Mythical Publicity were more important than protecting children after 2001.

As time goes by, reviving the Paterno Legacy may be easier for a short while, but protecting it over time, may be just as ineffective for the long term.

In a strange way of Justice Karma, the children were left unprotected, and Joe's Legacy is now part of a nightmare that Penn State wants to avoid since it shamed Penn State name.

Whether fair or not Joe's name was a victim of inaction and over reaction of fame that cannot erase the shame in Penn State Alma Mater Song or University!

Captain,

I greatly appreciate your consistently strong and insightful comments but am alarmed by two statements:

"Joe was confused what to do in 1998": Based on the new evidence from the 70s and 80s, this confusion was an act similar to that perpetrated by JS. The only confusion on his part was how to protect his legacy; and

"Joe's name was a victim of inaction": Please consider context of this mess----neither JP, nor his name, are a victim in ANY way. He created this environment. He bragged that his players could not get a parking ticket or miss class without his knowledge (part of his recruiting schtick). No part of JP is a victim.

Keep your thoughts and insights coming

At some point, Paterno knew what JS was. Maybe that was in 1971, or 1976, or 1987, or 1998, or 2001. Any way you slice it, he at least knew by 2001 what JS was. In spite of that, Paterno remained an honorary board member of Second Mile until the day he died. That tells me all I need to know about the level of concern he had for JS' victims.

The whole thing probably made that poor old lady crazy and that Dotty woman as well.

Ya really have to look past this stuff really sad if you ask me

Hail to Pitt

If anything, Joe victimized himself, in his mind, because he painted himself into a corner.

But I also doubt he was confused. He was told on a Saturday morning and thought about it all weekend. Decided to punt on Monday morning. If he was confused, surely someone would have stepped forward and said that Joe came to them looking for advice.

Same old mantra. No one knew anything as Jerry kept it hidden. Saint Joe is innocent.
Blah Blah Blah..........................

They will go to their graves believing their own lies.

Uhh……. the Paternos need to look in the mirror. Papa Paterno and lead administrators took a bad tragedy and made it worse by allowing to continue. When first learning of the tragedy they should have had a police investigation…plain and simple!

Deal with it!
