With our new staff, there has been a lot of discussion regarding the offense and defense, but not so much on special teams. This has often been a problem area for Pitt and I am curious to see what type of focus Narduzzi and his staff put on it. Theoretically, a more attacking and aggressive demeanor on defense could lead to improved special teams play.
I do not expect us to make anyone forget about Virginia Tech - special teams - wise, but if we can improve this area to where we get a few difference making plays, or even just avoid the seemingly annual game day gaffes on special teams, it could lead to a couple of more wins, which we desperately need.
A couple of recent recruits that I was excited to see on our special teams that I thought could make an impact based on their HS film was Rori Blair and Zach Challingsworth. It will be interesting to see who the staff slates for the units this year.
Obviously, we should have an edge with Boyd returning punts and I like the potential of our kick returners too.
Make special teams an area of strength instead of weakness...I think if we can do that, it will really help spark this team and could be good for a win or two more a year.
