Lee loses last match of HS career for only loss ala Dan Gable (in college of course). He looked wore out at the end just hanging on. Opponent took him down twice last period and let Lee up to do it. Lee's going to Iowa and the other kid to Drexel. Teasdale won at 26 AA, he's going to Iowa. Max Murin from Ebensburg Central Cambria won AA at 38 he's going to Iowa. No one that won is going to PSU or Pitt. Couple kids going to OK, and one to Iowa St. Bonacorsi got taken down like Lee last seconds to lose by one. He had a stalling call weighting in the back of his mind and took what I thought was a bad shot and the kid got behind him. Good match though.

It came out after the match that Spencer Lee tore his ACL about a month ago and hadn't practiced since then ...... he was wearing a heavy brace on his right knee and couldn't move laterally very well ..... that is why he wore out and didn't wrestle like he usually does ..... Lee made no excuses after the match about the knee.

It is actually amazing that he got through the sectionals, WPIAL meet , and all the way to the finals at states with that injury .... and he lost to the #4 ranked wrestler in the country by one point on a last second takedown ..... AMAZING how well Lee did considering the injury !!!!

Bonaccorsi who was ranked #2 in the country at 182 lbs. lost a close match to the #4 182 lb wrestler in the country, Travis Stefanik ..... again, Bonaccorsi lost 4-3 on a takedown by Stefanik late in the 3rd period ..... a very close match by two top wrestlers.

This quote from DeSanto is telling (from an article by Jim Carlson):

DeSanto worked a trio of outside single-leg takedowns, each time going after Lee’s head looking for a cradle and coming around for control.

“I’m excited but at the same time I wrestled a hurt Spencer Lee,” DeSanto said. “You could see his knee. He was favoring it the whole time. I just kind of feel bad for him.

“But at the same time, I’m excited for myself. I worked every day after that (2016) tech fall to beat him and I got my dream, I guess.”

So it was no secret that Lee was wrestling injured...DeSanto knew. And if he knew, so did others.

As far as Bonaccorsi, once he got the lead, it looked as though he was wrestling to "not lose". He's a good, tough kid, but that stall warning (deserved) made it even worse for him.... It's hard to believe that Bethel Park has never had a state champion in their history.

Agree completely with your last statement. He felt like he had to shoot, and dove instead of stepping and bringing his legs. Easy go behind for Stefanik. . I thing Bonacorsi will be a good collegiate wrestler for Pitt. Much higher ceiling than his brother.

The reason there probably is no one going to PSU is that they have almost no scholarships. I don't think they heavily recruited Lee. Their team is loaded with freshman and sophomores. I think Rutherford is the only junior who starts and the walk-on from the WPIAL, Guillibon, is the only senior (although Rutherford might be a senior too). They are ranked #1 this year and are loaded for at least two more years. They redshirted their entire freshman class last year so they have two classes wrestling as freshmen this year.

The reason only Bono is going to Pitt? Well, there are about 100 posts about our WPIAL recruiting.

Understood. Seems wrestling is about the only sport where a legacy holds some credence. Even Virginia and VA tech come into PA and take kids from Pitt.

Penn State recruited Spencer Lee as hard as they could - probably thinking that he would be 125, Suriano 133, and Cortez 141. Believe me, they recruited him heavily.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting. I know you live in the wrestling capital of PA. I went to some of my guys there when I saw the match and asked them what happened. I knew something was up when he let Lee up. Think about that. A three time world champion being let up by a wrestler within his own state. My C-M wrestling friends in Hershey knew about the ACL. The wrestling community knew.

He's been wrestling with a huge brace that covered basically his entire leg for the last few weeks. Everyone knew that something was wrong. I don't think many knew the extent of the injury though
