Sporting News worst coach hires: We're on twice but ...

There was a worse hire than Mike Haywood? Not even close. Gets arrested and never coaches a game here, come on!

SP hired three of those selections.
Callahan, Haywood, Graham.

There are some on the list that I don't agree with, honestly. But to each their own.

I guess it depends what the definition of "worst" is in this category.

For instance, O'Leary is/was a hell of a football coach and I think he would have done an excellent job in South Bend. Lying on a resume about a degree he didn't earn over twenty years earlier precluded that from happening. Hiring Weis (at the time) was not a disaster, what was the disaster was extending him so quickly and with the money involved. He proved to be a disaster. He may be the smartest of all...getting paid big time to do nothing!

Also, Zook was not exactly a disaster for Illinois. He did have some success with them and took them to the BCS.

Firing Solich and hiring Callahan was a disaster from which Nebraska never recovered.

Definitely "was" for O'leary; UCF is terrible this year, have they won a game? I have no sympathy for people who falsify their resume or make fake claims about things they never really accomplished.

But also led them to seasons of 10-4, 11-3, 12-1, and 9-4, all seasons where they won their conference (C-USA or AAC). The 12-1 year won them the American Conference's last automatic BCS bid. I'm not sure what happened this year, but he has done OK there.

Actually that is an "Incomplete" grade. Because we'll never know if he was a good football coach or not, he never coached.

I posted earlier, but I think that the guy at Purdue, Hazell, is a pretty god indication of what might have been here. Pretty similar background to Haymaker.

While it may be premature....I think the Belilema hire at Arkansas will prove to be a colossal blunder.

I think a Southern coordinator may have been a better choice than a midwestern farmer......Jeff long is a pretty smart guy. Why he hired BB remains a mystery to me.

I should also acknowledge the Sarkesian hire at USC

Incredible that the consecutive hires at Temple of Jerry Berndt, Ron Dickerson, and Bobby Wallace are nowhere near this list. That was a two-decade black hole!
