I have recently seen the UPMC practice facility referred to as the UPMC Rooney sports complex. When Did they change the name or is it just a news type reference. I wasn't aware that the Rooney's financed the complex.but did know in its origin that UPMC was the moving force. I have seen it referred to as the South Side practice facility. and never as the Pitt sports complex.

name added when they expanded it a couple years ago when the steelers split the cost with upmc for the upgrades
I am more curious the origin reason and benefit of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center shortening its name to its initials.
Just less unwieldy in ads?
Less parochial given the strategy to branch out beyond SWPA?
Did the university not want backlash that (sad to say) the medical entity has gotten from idiot politicians and media?
Is there some perceived negativity the medical entity perceives from having the full name of the U spelled out?
I think Pitt misses out by it.

Yep.
Why for branding? Simpler. Concise. Especially when you are putting your trademark on dozen and dozens of facilities, subsidiaries, and services. Possible because they also had their sights set beyond Western Pennsylvania.
FYI for everyone, the University of Pittsburgh actually owns the trademark for "UPMC".
