The reason is that St. John's has reached out and put out some feelers to candidates. Apparently they did not like the salaries and responses they were getting from their targets.
Now, this a fluid situation that can change at any time. It sounds like they don't want to let him go and pay the buyout if they aren't sure they can get their guy.
The last time this job was open, they didn't get much interest. I believe Marc Jackson is their dream hire, but he has no interest. This Big East is a much different league now, and these schools will have a tough time keeping up with the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, etc.
