This is nuts. If the Steelers were in the NFC south, they probably go 12-5 this year and people would be declaring them contenders.

Then they’d lose their first round playoff game and pick 26th in each round at the NFL draft.

I much prefer missing the playoffs, having full and clear perspective of how far away you are from a championship, and having better draft positioning rather than making the playoffs and being a sacrificial lamb for a team that’s actually good.

Some would rather the playoffs. I strongly disagree.

uh, the only thing that is nuts is the supposition that they would probably go 12-5 this year

I’m one that has been guilty of looking ahead and speculating how high of a draft pick the Steelers were going to end up with. But now, it sure is looking like their draft position won’t be much different than in prior years, definitely not enough to make a big difference in who will or won’t be available on a given pick.

What’s more surprising is after yesterdays results and looking at remaining schedules, the Steelers weren’t that far from a realistic shot at a playoff spot. I think the Chargers pulling out their win at the end of their game yesterday killed any realistic chance the Steelers had because the Chargers sure aren’t going to lose 2 games with who they have left on their schedule. Everyone else battling for that last playoff spot can easily drop out based on who they have left, including matches against other teams battling for that last 1 or 2 playoff spots. The Steelers of late have shown that they can hang with other middle of the pack teams so there is a chance they could win the last 3, even a Ravens team with Jackson.

Not that it would make any difference if the Steelers made the playoffs as they wouldn’t last long, just surprising to see, after looking at it, that their chances weren’t as remote as I had thought.

They would have double digit wins at minimum considering they’d have 7 or 8 alone within their division. Easy to surmise that they’d win a few others.

A few weeks ago it was easy to see that the Steelers would get to 7 wins. People like you thought it was nuts. You’re not good at this.

We had no business beating the Bengals, but we absolutely should have beaten the Jets and Ravens and certainly could have beaten the Patriots, Dolphins, and Browns. We could/should very easily be 8-6ish, which is pretty nuts considering we didn't even belong on the same field as the Bills and Eagles and it took a quirk-laden effort for the ages to outlast Cincy once.

I'm pretty happy with not making the playoffs. Even if we go 8-9, that was good enough for pick #'s 13 and 14 last season (we picked 20th). But I'd still predict 7-10. And getting helplessly smoked against someone in the playoffs is a frustrating thing to watch anyway.

People like you..not sure what that means as I never really discussed the Steelers this year..now you are just making stuff up..

You’re not good at this.... '
This' being silly SMF-like conjecture ..hahaha

once again, if they were in that division in your hypothetical, their foes within would know them well and they would not win 7 or 8. They are going to drop 2 to a mediocre Browns team in their current division and lost at home to a Ravens team without their starting QB so so much for the "givens"....

I’m glad they don’t. They would make the playoffs and get crushed in the first round. It would give Tomlin and the Rooneys a false sense of hope that they are only one or two players away from the Super Bowl…. No thanks…

I don't know if even they could possibly believe they're only two players away, haha. It might lead them to declare this season a success, however. For all this talk I hear about Steeler fans being spoiled, I don't know... there sure were a lot of them in Charlotte yesterday to watch two 5-8 teams duke it out. They might just be content if you give them one more week of having an excuse to drink these days.

I just think there are a lot of locals who moved down there. My buddy was at that game and he's a transplant. Fast growing area.

You and Pittmeister sure don’t think too highly of Tomlin or the Rooney’s football intelligence levels. Do you really think either of them believe they are only 1 or 2 players away. I think they’re more in touch with reality than you are giving them credit for. I also don’t think winning 1 or 2 more games would make them feel any different.

It’s more a rooney thing for me. He runs the team as though medicrity is acceptable. As a matter of fact, he even said that the goal of the franchise each year is to make the playoffs and hope to win a game.

So if you go 10-7, 11-6, or 12-5, would Rooney be motivated to make needed changes?

My feelings about Tomlin & the Rooneys is based what I’ve seen and heard over the last few years. Instead of doing what must be done to rebuild the team quickly, they’ve made moves that addressed the present, not the future.

Signing Roethlisberger was one that stands out. Drafting a RB told me that they felt their OL was alright and all they needed was a RB to get their offense going and then it was back to the playoffs…

We heard “The standard of the standard” for years, even though it was clear the team was creating a different standard.

The first positive move I’ve seen in years was Colbert stepping down. He and Tomlin were co-GM’s in my book. Tomlin is a good coach, but he needs to stay out of the personnel business. Their drafting has been bad. If the Steelers draft Porter, you’ll know it was a Tomlin pick.

I could go on and on.

That's the way I often look at it, I mean all season long, I watch every minute of every Steelers game since 1969, and there are no other games that I watch from beginning to end, so I've liked having a hopeless playoff game just so I have one more week of caring about who wins. But even after they're eliminated, I still drink just as much :)

There’s an old cotton mill in Charlotte that was converted into a trendy food court/restaurant type center called Optimist Hall. It’s about 2 miles from the stadium. Pretty neat place. On one of the walls it has a timeline showing the population growth of Charlotte. It’s unreal how quick it grew and became the hub that it is. Even in the early 90’s, it was still small time and small population.
