I almost never watch NBA hoops but I watched a little tonight and Stephen Curry is the most interesting basketball player I have seen in many years. Skinny, a good but not great athlete, he totally dominates and it is like he is playing a different sport. Maybe this is a common comparison for people who follow the NBA but he reminds me of a more winning version of Pete Maravich. He is an absolute basketball genius.

It's already hard enough to guard his three point shooting. But when he's beating bigs for rebounds ... wow!

There's so much to being good at this game that simply cannot be explained by the thought of "who has the most skills."

Curry is skilled for sure. But otherwise, he's some sort of mutant about how he plays the game.

I was thinking of bringing up a post like this in the past but now that DT has started on on Steph, I will throw this into the mix.
This guy had ZERO big time offers and wounded up at Davidson. He is now destroying the NBA.

Not saying this is the standard, but just because someone isn't a highly ranked recruit doesn't mean they can't become a good player. If they have the right determination and skill and are developed in the right program, it can happen.

Why can't Pitt get lucky and get a kid like Curry. He is the most enjoyable player to watch play in the NBA today, in my opinion.

Lebron is great (not Michael Jordan) but he is methodical, not as exciting. Curry is a great basketball player that is only a decent athlete. He is shooting at an incredible rate. He is making 88% of his unchallenged looks in the playoffs ! for his size, he rebounds and plays defense. very good passer as well.

It's funny in hindsight how Virginia Tech only offered the chance to walk-on only because his father played there. Curry chose Davidson over VCU, had 13 turnovers in his first college game and the rest is history.

Dont sell Curry short --he has tremendous athletic skill, namely, great agility, quickness and just super natural hands with a hair trigger release. People sometimes only think of running speed and jumping ability when they mention athletic skill but quickness, agility and hand speed/ security are equally athletic. watch hisskill with the ball in either hand and the way he can manipulate his body to create space for shots----absolutely elite athlete

He reminds me more of a shorter Reggie Miller. A killer shot from the 3 point line.

IMO what makes him better than the players he plays against ...... he's smarter than they are. i.e his rebounding.

The fact that he was Dell Curry's kid combined with his obvious skill set in HS should've been enough to get him some big time offers, but coaches are set in their ways and stereotypes when they evaluate these kids. The whole "too small", "too slow", "not strong enough" mentality has resulted in some big time recruiting misses, perhaps none bigger than Steph Curry.

But unlike Miller, who was great in his own way, he is so much more than just a shooter.

It's funny. He is almost the antithesis of today's basketball player. As you said, not the greatest athlete, won't win dunk contests, not looking like he can be an NFL TE, but he just has all the basketball skills you crave in a guard outside of out of this world athleticism. He is "old school" to build on your Maravich comparison. Jerry West maybe another comparison.
