Stevenson to Nevada

This is a shocker to me. I’ve never thought much of his game so for Musselman, who is one of the hottest coaches in the country, to take him on is puzzling.

Best of luck to him, however. Great landing spot (until EM goes to UCLA)

Nevada loses a lot of players next season. They average 23 years old.

Vince Lee transferred out of Nevada a red shirt freshman.

Might think it was prearranged if you were any kind of skeptic.
That's exactly what i think. I hope Capel was behind it because that's an awesome way to treat your problem kids - find them a quality landing spot where they might yet change their ways & succeed.

Stevenson has some talent, so I don't think him landing at a decent program is all that surprising. Musselman won't put up with laziness any more than Capel, though, so Shamiel is still going to have to put in the work or he'll be out of chances soon.

Can someone with a brain or atleast half a brain ( so that leaves Souf out) explain to me how PITT can lose a player that transfers to the AP Poll # 6 team in the country?????????????????????????????

I usually don't mind when someone leaves a PITT team and goes D1AA or D2 but Capel can't find a spot for a guy that Nevada wants?????????????????????????????????????????????

Ok he wasn't playing as much as he wanted well if he can't crack the PITT lineup how does he play any minutes on the 6th ranked team in the country?????????????????????????????????

Oh I get it he has something Neveda the 6th team in the country wants.
Well whatever that skill is PITT can use it so let him do the stuff Nevada thinks he can do???

Joe the Panther fan is one of the few poster who can clear this up. Joe is in the someone that has a complete functioning brain who also posts on the Pantherlair Free Basketball message board with half his fully functioning brain tied behind his back just for practice.

They currently have a senior laden team, so they will be reloading with lots of opportunities for next season when Stevenson is eligible in the Spring semester.

Ok I get the Nevada senior laden team thing.
So Stevenson isn't playing on a PITT team that just by some miracle of a new coach emerged from a tarpit leaving a few dinosaurs behind them.
Again he isn't playing at PITT but he's good enough to backfill for a nationally ranked team?
If that's the case and he's successful at Nevada I believe Capel made his first big mistake??

If a player doesn't make it at school A and then transfers and has success at school B, that doesn't necessarily mean school A made a mistake.

I'm also not sure you're really framing Nevada in an accurate way. They're not just a senior laden team, they literally only have one player who has recorded a point and isn't a junior or senior. All of their key players are seniors with a couple of juniors rotating in here and there. That one non-upperclassman was a top 20 recruit last year.

It's not like this is a historically successful program that can just plug in 4 and 5 stars whenever they want. It's a great team because of Musselman and, I suppose from that perspective, you could argue that him seeing something worthwhile in Stevenson is meaningful. Then again, it's not his talent that's the problem, so it's kind of a moot point. Whatever Capel has seen that he doesn't like is probably not something that Musselman is privy to, at least not nearly to the same extent.

This isn’t anything until next year. Nobody knows what this means until he actually suits up and either plays or doesn’t play.
Maybe Nevada likes him because they know his high school puts out good players and he played in the ACC. It could also be a thing where Nevada really doesn’t have anything to lose taking an ACC transfer. Maybe the coach said nothing is guaranteed for next year but he’ll give him a chance.

Or maybe Stevenson has some hidden talent none of us have seen. Either way, nothing to make of it until next year.

Yeah, they start 5 seniors and the team is built on transfers. They have 7 seniors and only one of them has not transferred in. They have 10 transfer players out of 19 players (the 19 includes two walk ons). I heard during one of their games that the starting 5 averages 23 years old.

There are plenty of roster spots next year, plus, as has been mentioned, Stevenson went to high school in the Southwest. If he goes there and does well, good for him. But after watching him last season and the minimal amount he played this season against the competition we faced, he wasn't going to help us.

Oh I don't think his talent is "hidden." He's an undersized 4 that is athletic enough to
be a Div 1 player. He just doesn't fit the system that Capel has installed......that is
an up tempo, intense, hustling every minute system. Put him on a typical mid
level team with a Center, a wing and two guards and he would see the floor IMO,
as long as they played a tempo more suited to him. If he were at a St. Francis
type team he'd probably start. If he were at a Duquesne type, he'd probably
play as a sub.

What you mentioned about Nevada taking him makes sense. Also, since
a Div 1 team has 13 scholarships, maybe they see him as the 8th through
13th. There's a lot of players on scholarship around the country who
don't see much floor time. Every team has em.

I would guess that because they will have so many open spots, they figure he's worth a gamble. They'd probably prefer not to take a ton of freshmen as well. He helps even out the classes. For him, it's another chance to play at a high level. If he ends up glued to the bench, he'll probably be able to grad transfer to a lower level school as a fifth year senior.
