Huh? I think what it means is that TCU said we want to pay the buyout, Pitt said fine, here's the check. TCU balked at it, the schools negotiated, and then Pitt was paid a handsome sum of money to vacate their contract with Coach Dixon. Pitt BB got several million dollars richer today.

Barnes pretty much said the actual total amount of the buyout was ridiculous. Nobody was ever going to pay the full amount. The parting gift to Dixon from the previous administration was guaranteed financial security.
