Sunday Game Times

Am I the only one who thinks is it absurd to have Sunday night ncaa games starting at 9:40 when there was a 2 1/2 hour gap in start times in the afternoon with no overlap for the first 2 games?
How about CBS doing Duke/Michigan State opposite another game? WHAT???? Illinois/Houston gets a full national audience but Duke/MSU doesn't? What sense does that make?

The Greenville games (Duke and Miami/Auburn) should have been the noon, 2:30 games.

But, leave it to SMF to figure this out

noon: CBS (East)
2:00: TBS (South)
2:30 CBS (East)
4:30 TBS (South)
5:00 CBS (MW)
7:00 TBS (West)
7:30 TNT (MW)
9:30 TBS (West)

No delay between games

in other words.....

WHAT???? a potentially more competitive 4/5 matchup gets a full national audience but a 2/7 matchup doesn't?

Don't be an idiot. Duke/Michigan State, Coach K in his possible last ever game vs a near blue blood gets significantly higher ratings in a full national TV game than a non-brand Illinois team and a Houston team that most people never heard of.

this should not be about ratings...you can watch whatever f'ing game you want...they are all on and only an idiot could not find them on the dial....supposed to be fair to all involved...4/5 beats 2/7 (matchup where one coach owns the other) competitively , except for coach jock sniffers such as yourself.

This might be the most ridiculous statement ever uttered on this message board. I'm giving you a chance to take it back. Ratings and $$$$$$ are the ONLY thing that matters.
to who? you?

Oddly enough a more competitive game means more to me as opposed to watching Coach K beat Izzo for the 20th time...but hey, I like basketball.

If the game is a ratings juggernaut, then everyone will watch it no matter what the hell is is on against it will they not?

Stop it. You know ratings and money are all that matters to CBS and the NCAA. And you also know there is very little difference in competitiveness between a 4/5 matchup and 2/7 matchup. Houston was favored by 3.5. Duke by 6.5. The decision to make Illinois/Houston a full national game wasn't due to them thinking America would be glued to the TV to watch a back and forth game. It was made due to stupidity.

you did not answer my question...additional 3 points is significant within the realm of perceived competitiveness in a basketball game...

btw...this is not the Walter f'ing Cronkite era of television...no viewer gives two squats about whatever the hell a "full national" game is. Just want to watch whatever game interests them. Pretty sure the scheduling and times of these pod games are pre-determined anyways. The Sunday Duke/MSU game would have been played at the same time if it had been Davidson/Cal State Fullerton.

Times in the East may also be a function of start times in other time zones that work for those physically attending the games.

CBS most likely wanted Duke vs. MSU to be the lead into 60 Minutes, 5pm to 7pm is the marquee time slot with a lot more people watching TV compared to a 2:40pm tipoff, even with another game tipping off an hour later. Also, they would have needed Miami vs. Auburn as the noon game if Duke vs. MSU was at 2:40, the Canes and Fighting Pearls being relegated to TruTV shows that the networks had no real hope of it drawing any ratings.

To answer your question, it is bad for business to put on a premier game such as Duke/MSU up against another game because no one will watch the other game. Duke/MSU should have been the noon or 2:30 game with no other game on. Then Illinois/Houston could have split the national audience at 5:00 with Wisconsin/Iowa State or whatever other game was on.

Good point about 60 minutes. But Miami/Auburn is no better game than Illinois/Houston from a brand standpoint.

CBS most likely wanted Ohio State and Villanova as the 2:40pm game, seeding is somewhat disregarded when it's a massive school like Ohio State playing a legit National Champion contender and recent winner like Villanova.

Also, the Iowa State vs. Wisconsin game started late enough that 99.99999% of people watching weren't going to switch away from Duke-MSU.

I agree seeding is disregarded for semi-brand name teams Nova and OSU....just like Duke and MSU.

I would have went Miami/Auburn at noon, Duke/MSU at 2:30 for the full national game. Then OSU/Nova as the 60 minutes lead-in game competing with Wisconsin/ISU.

Full national is meaningless when the time slot with the most viewers is 5pm to 7pm and CBS wanting the biggest game of the day as a lead in to 60 Minutes. Also, the 2nd half of Duke-MSU was up against the 1st half of ISU and Wisconsin, no one outside of Ames, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin was turning the channel to watch the Cyclones and Badgers.

CBS manages to do this every year. They air exclusive double headers on Saturday and Sunday afternoons then squeeze in 6 other games after 5 PM. They want those exclusive advertising windows, Screw the fans that want constant hoops and like the option to switch to other games.
