This was the game that scared me the most. Trap game against a decent team that plays hard and has some play makers. We found a way:
1. The fake punt was, obviously, the biggest play in the game. Schemed perfectly. You put the two gunners on one side bringing a defender with them and you roll out Winslow to the weak side and isolate one Cuse player on Winslow and Galambos. It's really about reading that defender and Winslow did a great job.
2. People want to whine about the refs and yes they missed some blatant holds but besides that they were fine. A questionable offensive PI call went for us, the right overturn on the targeting hit and Ollison was down before the first down. I'm not sure why folks complain about the refs so much, rarely do they decide outcome of the game.
3. I thought this was by far our flatest performance. We lacked defensive energy and especially in the first we were off balance defensively. We had trouble with the read with this mobile qb. Gotta clean it up with UNC coming into town with a much more explosive offense. I'll say this, Syracuse has some nice young talent accross the board.
4. Tough matchup for Avonte. Big WR are going to give him trouble every time. He had good coverage most of the time, except on the slant for the TD but ball placement by the QB hurt him. Can't teach height.
5. Boy, Miami at home. My goodness. Clemson is good but not 58 pts better talent wise. Something is wrong in Coral Gables.
6. No one and absolutely no one is mentioning that we are bowl eligible in October and we shouldn't. While I think this team is overachieving big time, there are bigger fish to fry. That's a change.
7. Great play by Soto on the reverse. Stayed at home, broke down and didn't let the WR get the angle on a drive that held Cuse to a FG. Really great play.
8. James had a big run when it looked like he was tackled in the backfield but squirted free down the sideline for a big gain in a game tying drive in the first half. He frustrates me. Sometimes he looks like he can take it to the house and sometimes he's just way too tentative when he runs. Should be better.
9. GT? Really? How did FSU just score 16 pts? Didn't watch the game. And VT/Duke was some game but if Maryland wasn't ahem Maryland they win that game by 3 TD's. How is Hackenberg still standing. That kid takes a lot of hits.
10. Matt Galambos is having a great year. Yes I'll repeat he's having a great year. It would be nice to get Webb and Mitchell soon. Amara and Pitts lack foot speed and it was evident yesterday on a few plays.
11. Don't blame Rowell for his penalty. He was pulled down by his face mask right in front of the line judge. Not sure what they were watching.
12. Peterman made three throws where your saying man now I know why he beat out voytik. One was accross his body rolling under pressure to Holtz who if he doesn't fall has a TD. Another was a wide hash throw to Boyd that was an NFL throw and in the last drive a perfect pass to Orndoff in tight coverage.
13. Did not think the OL did a great job of handling blitzes yesterday and you can bet UNC coaches will be looking at game films. In fact, I thought the OL had their worst pass protecting game in a while. Syracuse likes to pressure the line of scrimmage much like we do and we were slow to react. Now road game and crowd noise has something to do with that.
14. I wonder when we go jumbo with Parish, Alston and no WR if there's a pass option on that play? We have run out of it every single time, i wonder if a play action will give you a big play to one of the TE?
15. 6-1 4-0 with a National TV game that really means something on Thursday. I really hope there's a really nice crowd and a great atmosphere. Could be a special night.
16. Coach Chaney is a pro. He knows what he's doing, I thought he had a great feel for that game. The double reverse pass by Boyd was a great call and we continue to be very good on short yardage. This coaching staff is worlds apart from previous staffs, and they never panic.
17. I wish I could come down for the game but have business travel. Been to Youngstown, GT and am coming to ND and probably going to Raleigh for Duke game. Having meaningful games in Oct and Nov has been a long time coming. Feels really good
