I now live out of state so yesterday was the first game I was able to attend this season. I've never been a Sweet Caroline fan (not that I don't like fun... It's just not original) but now I am more convinced than ever that it has to go next year. The team's very cool new tradition of jumping around at the start of the 4th was happening when abruptly the song came on and you could see the players stop immediately. It totally killed the emotion on the field. Why not carry that celebration throughout the entire stadium in some fashion moving forward. Find a song that gets people fired up and supplements what's happening on the field-- not some corny ripped-off Red Sox tradition that saps the energy out of the players.

Yep.

But people seem to think it is some kind of cherished "pitt tradition". It's not... it's derivative, a copy of what other teams have done, saps the energy from the stadium, and in general simply blows. It has the opposite effect of firing up the fans and team for the 4th quarter... it kills the buzz.

But too many people are against change, even if the change would undoubtedly be a positive one, to let it happen.

Best evidence was last week against Louisville. The crowd busted out a loud and spontaneous let's go pitt chant only to have Neil Diamond subdue the mood with hand touching. Whoever runs that type of stuff should appreciate organic chants from crowds and shut down the canned music. They even ran out of time last week so they played the war paint song in the middle of the 4th.

Maybe Who Let The Dogs Out or AC/DC Thunderstruck or Hells Bells something like these would be better to keep the crowd and team FIRED UP.

But, but, but the students that barely support the team and leave early like it!

It's an embarrassment.
Agreed. The students show up for two games each year... the opener and the nd/fsu/psu/wvu game.

All other games they don't show up, and the ones that do are on the bus before the final note of Sweet Caroline is finished playing, regardless of the score of the game.

ND was great. The students need to be like that for every game...show up and stay to the end.

Goody - another thread about SC along with student attendance. Now we just need another on campus stadium thread to make it a perfect trifecta.

Sweet Caroline is not moving or going away. The players love it. How many times does that need to be posted to get through to some of you? It truly isn't ALL about the fans ALL the time you know.

Pitt girl I think they like the crowds activity. Not the song. I doubt when they are warming up they are listening to Neil Diamond greatest hits on their beats by dre headphones

I bet the players would love something better even more.

So what? They were asked specifically by the AD this year about Sweet Caroline and they were clear that they love it.

What's really ironic is that my eldest who goes to NCSU was at the game with us yesterday. Unprovoked he said that he wished they did something like this at the beginning of the 4th qtr. for the Wolfpack student section. He said their song of choice doesn't generate any cheering whatsoever.

...while what we do saps any energy away from the crowd, since the entire student section en masse leaves as soon as the song ends.

So the extremely loud cheers that accompany this song must not mean anything to them, right? I really at am a loss what whiners some of you are. Wah wah, I don't like the song. Wah Wah, let's get rid of it. The students and a whole bunch of others do and it is one of the few times the stadium is extremely loud in unison. But sure, let's get rid of it because wah wah, I don't like the song!

Sorry for the snark but this subject has been talked about, reviewed and put to bed by the AD. But on Pantherlair it just goes on and on and on and on.......

I have always thought it should be played ONLY when we win and as soon as time expires.

It's just another turd left behind by Steve Pederson, right up there with the Dino Cat. It's a tie to an era of Pitt football that would best be forgotten.

I could get on board with this being played after a win. Followed by the alma mater.

I used to hate as a student how they would play Toby Keith "How Do You Like Me Now" after wins... Just terrible.

Yep.

That's what kills me about this idiotic discussion..
It's the one time the crowd chants Let's Go Pitt. Even on road games. That's why I like the song. And we've been doing this long enough now that it is a tradition.
When you guys start doing that during other parts of games, then talk to me about getting rid of it. Otherwise, you sound like a bunch of Bob Smiziks.

Not only that but the video montage they usually play after Sweet Caroline was cut short because they were ready to get back to play. The 4th quarter party and the highlight video or whatever you wanna call it are much better IMO and actually get the crowd pumped up.

Looked like the Miami players liked it more than PITT

Agree w OP it must go down...And go down hard

I always liked Sweet Caroline. With the 4th quarter party this year it's clear Sweet Caroline needs to go. I've gone a complete 180. Play the War Paint video with new music. You can tell the players aren't into SC anymore.

Also, they need to go back to the the old 4th quarter party. I don't like how Duzz told the players to settle down a few weeks back.

Did anybody else notice the Miami players were jumping up and down more than PITT at the quarter break yesterday?

Umm...this is a messgae board where Pitt related things are discussed. If each topic was only allowed to be discussed once, it would be pretty quiet around here.

As far as the song goes, I used to love it at games, but now agree that it's worn out its welcome.
