Syracuse "sympathy"??

Can someone please explain to me why so many people want the committee to give Syracuse sympathy for Boeheim missing games this year? He missed them for rules infractions! Isn't that the point of making him miss games?

If they discount the record, then why even suspend him?

I heard a bunch of this on ESPN yesterday. I'm thinking it's because Syracuse has a well regarded broadcast communications program and I'm guessing like 9/10 of the ESPN staff went to school there.
