You all thought Capel had it bad, Syracuse Wbball team has lost 12 of their 15 players to the transfer portal. And this was a tournament team last year.

Usually, an exodus like this may point to a bigger issue with the coach or program, however I'm not finding anything substantial other than 4 players being suspended last year for violating covid safety protocols. Maybe there's more to it but I haven't seen anything yet.

They have to live in Syracuse for 3/4 of the year. Reason enough.

They also have 4 transfers coming in and the #11 class. Looks bad but completely manageable with a few more transfers.

This is going to ruin the sport of college basketball. I'm sorry. It might be the right thing to do for the players but the paying customers don't want to see half their team transfer every season.

Kamilla Cardoso would look so good in a Pitt uniform.

Unfortunately I am sure that she will end up someplace much higher on the women's basketball food chain than here.

It will stabilize. It is literally impossible for this many players to transfer into better situations. There's also extra complication from 5th year seniors not occupying roster spots, and that won't apply in future years.

IMO this only forces coaches to coach the way they should have been all along. You can't get away with lying to kids about playing time anymore, and you'll actually be forced to focus on developing your underclassmen or they'll leave.

It also obsoletes the coaching BS about needing years and years to implement "your" roster. You can go into the portal and immediately field a team of experienced players. You also can't rely on retaining 2-4 years of recruits because half of them aren't going to stay anyway (as we've seen). It should make evaluating guys like Capel a lot easier.

I still think its going to be around 20% of players transferring every year. This year, its 30%. Most teams are still going to lose 2-3 players to transfer every year.

I'm not sure its a lying about playing time thing. Many guys were multi-year starters. I think part of it is recruiting has gotten so over the top where these 16 and 17 year olds are treated like kings then all of a sudden they step on campus and coach yells at them or tries to "coach" them and they cant handle it. Where was that super nice cool coach from the recruiting visit?

That's my point. If you are a HC, you are going to stop recruiting the risky egos because even if you land a good recruit, you can't be confident he will stay. Assuming you want guys who stay for 3-4 years, you'll seek out guys who fit your program.

Things are different in WBB because there is so much less parity. Top teams can recruit 15 studs and figure out later who will never see the court. Pitt is actually in a position to go promise huge minutes and it would benefit us if opposing coaches can't lie to recruits about doing the same.
