Syracuse wrestling

Yes cut due to title IX in the 90s. I believe they were ranked in the top 25 at the time.

Team cut 2001 due to lack of funding. Needed 15 million to continue program. Did not raise the money, thus program discontinued. There is some talk of restarting wrestling program.

they definitely cited title IX. Something about adding women’s sports and funding. They cut some other men’s sports too

$15 million for Wrestling back in 2001? That certainly has title IX written all over it. There is no way it cost that much to fund a wrestling team or all the PSAC schools would have been D2 years ago if not outright eliminated. Since there is a lot of talk that Slippery Rock is trying to get their team back today, that tells me Syracuse $15 million had to be to cover women sports.

I know Mean Gene Mills has always been trying to get the team up and running again. I hope he is successful. Wrestling in general, and ACC specifically, can use another team and NY has the talent to support Cuse if they choose to.

Does Title IV even make sense anymore? $15 million for a wrestling program seems high but it is more than the Pirates payroll.

I know that added softball around that time period.

it would be great if they brought it back. I heard Clemson has had some talks about adding it.

IMO Cuse needs to add because there is talent in NY. As nice as Clemson adding wrestling, it would be better for Wrestling and the ACC if Georgia Tech and one of the Florida Schools (Florida St or Miami) added it. There is more homegrown talent in those states than SC. I would like to see Boston College add a team also. Correct me if I am wrong but other than Sacred Heart and Harvard (who would recruit differently than other schools) there is no other D1 teams in the NE.

It would be great if the ACC wrestling looked like

Pitt
VA
VA Tech
NC St
UNC
Duke
BC
Cuse
GA Tech
Miami or Flordia St.

That would look fabulous but that is probably a pipe dream. At most I can only see one of those schools getting a team.

Personally, two more teams would be more than enough. Syracuse should definitely be one, and I definitely like a FL school as a second add since their wrestling climate has gotten much stronger. I also think Louisville could be a good choice due to their proximity to the midwest recruiting grounds. Not sure if they have the appetite for it though

I'd be ecstatic if we got to 8 teams. Syracuse and whoever would be fine with me.

If NC State or UNC relied on homegrown talent, both would be awful. Instead, the new Intermat rankings have NC State as the #2 dual meet team in the country. They are doing it with wrestlers from PA (the Hidlay brothers), NJ, NY and CT and a sprinkling of other areas.

No reason Clemson couldn’t do the same thing. The key is hiring a coach with contacts in the areas where the HS wrestlers are. In its recruiting class, NC State has the top-ranked senior recruit from NJ and the PIAA AAA Hwt champion, who is ranked #2 nationally by Intermat. (Pitt has the PIAA AA state champion.)

All it takes to get good is a financial commitment like NC State has made.

I would love to see GA Tech add wrestling. Seems like there has been a decent amount of talent coming out of GA the last few years. They had 12 wrestlers qualify for nationals last year including the Russell brothers, Bullards, and Taylor Lujan.
