Their source says his buyout is "north of 5 million" which would be a major issue for them but this is where having a really good AD comes into play (though I don't yet know if Barnes is any good or not).

Sean Miller is feeling a little heat. If Barnes can come in and give him a little raise, Arizona may negotiate a lower buyout amount with us so they can go out and hire a bigger name......like Greg Marshall? We can then allow Dixon to go to TCU, eliminating most of his buyout if they'll take him.

Its not that I think Miller is some kind of wonder coach but he's no worse than Dixon and a better recruiter. Miller recruits above his program prestige status. Dixon recruits below our program prestige status. What I mean by that is on a scale of 1 to 10 if Arkansas-Pine Bluff is a 1 and Kentucky is 1 10, Arizona is an 8 and Pitt is a 6. But, Miller is recruiting at a 9 level, at a near-blueblood level while Dixon I recruiting at a 4, at an A10/mid-major level. At Pitt, I think Miller recruits at a a 7, giving us a better chance to do something in March

If Dixon leaves, I understand why Pitt fans would want an alum like Miller. But I'd take Marshall unless Miller came for no more of a cost.

And look at his results this year. Sorry, I'll pass.

Either of those guys would probably have to be fired to come here. I remember the last time fire Dixon stuff heated up, people were saying Shaka smart and Brad Stevens. I really think we would end up with an up and comer, not an established coach with a decent gig.

Forget Greg Marshall. He's waiting for a much better job than Pitt.

I wouldn't risk an "up and comer." Probably wouldn't even risk Archie. If we can't get Sean Miller, just let Dixon coach us to 8-10 seeds every year. It beats the coach of UNCW coming here and coaching us to NITs.

Marshall is 53. What is he waiting for, Lebron to call him?

I know he'll never come here, but you have to think it would be a good time for Marshall to find that dream job if he actually wants to leave WSU. He's losing a ton to graduation this year. The seniors on that team are a really special group that will not be easily replaced.

It's hard for me to place where Pitt really is as a program. People call others homers, but then when evaluating Pitt take a homer view as if we are some great program with an exalted history. Pitt had a 7 year stretch. Now we are saying a 3-5 year mediocre stretch. The cupboard isn't entirely bare, but what top/hot coach would light his hair on fire to get here, even for more money, if his current gig is good? If I was a betting man, which i am not, I suspect a mid major coach who has had some success. That seems to be our m.o., soccer coach notwithstanding.

Or maybe a Miller who would coach us to a one and out, as a higher seed.

If TCU wants him, then they can have him. Greg Marshall is the home run hire. Nobody thought Buzz Williams would go to VT, so who knows. Marshall is losing a couple star players this year. There is a list of about 10 guys who could do just as good or better than what we have accomplished the last 6 years. Coaches who more than likely would come here.

Yea maybe. But I know what I have in Dixon. An average coach who has average teams. Dixon has taken us as far as he can and is regressing badly. Miller is the same guy pretty much, just a better recruiter. Sometimes you just need a scenery change. And with lagging ticket sales, maybe Miller breathes some new life into the program.

Jamie is a classy guy and probably the winningest Pitt BB coach ever. But all things being equal probably time to move on. Sean Miller is a terrific recruiter. Tucson is probably more of a BB waist land than PGH. That said his bro may have more upside. A confident great recruiting up and coming BB coach would come to Pitt in a heart beat. We used to recruit NY,NY!

I still think you were right with Smart and Stevens. We should call the Celtics and see if we can git 'er done.

Well JD has done that already too in the past, your point?
My point is what SMF aspires to - why would we replace one coach for the other? The point can be made that Sean Miller attracts AND recruits much better players and yet - he lost too.

Miller has recruited MUCH better than Dixon and he too is sitting at home as a much higher seed. Get over him SMF.

It would take $5 million to hire Marshall. Not happening.

You wouldn't know what a basketball was if it hit you in the head. Go sit in the corner.

Because he recruits better so there would at least be a glimmer of a hope of not sh!tting the bed in March. I'm not saying we wouldn't still sh!t the bed because he's certainly done that at Arizona but with better players, we have a better chance.

SMF - where is Sean Miller right now? At home. Give me break.

What would it take to get Sean Miller here salary wise? Would have to be north of 4 mil, no?? I would think that number is almost or just as unlikely as what it would for Marshall.

If Dixon were to leave, everyone here who wants him gone has no right to complain about the next hire, whoever he is.

Miller has recruited MUCH better than Dixon

Thank you. I just want better players. Miller wont bring Top 3 classes like at AZ but maybe Top 10, Top 15, Top 20. And MAYBE those better players get us further. I'd certainly like to take that chance.

So wait? Miller couldn't get to the FF at a blue blood, Arizona, with top 5 classes. But at pitt he will get top 20 classes and win?

That makes sense...

I was always a believer that no college basketball coach could do less with more than Jim Boeheim. Then Sean Miller came along. He's the most overrated coach west of Josh Pastner.

I will take Miller's better players than Dixon's worse players. Do I predict Miller leads us to FF? No. Will Dixon? Absolutely not. But, with better players, I just personally feel that better players give you a better chance of winning but what do I know?

Exactly right. I mean, Young is our best player this year. Who really expected him to have a huge game today? Did he even play today..

When you get the kind of talent that can go pro after freshman, sohpmore years . notice i said talent, not size..we did have 1, yes 1 under dixons tenure because he coached in new zealand before but he wasn't the type of talent that millers were. Adams didn't do much here at all really and went pro because hes 7 feet tall and can move.

Those types of recruits there is a chance almost ever year of going on a run. Young and Artis there is a chance to beat the cupcakes, hang well enough with the mid/lower tier of ACC to bubble into the tourney and flame out.

Notre Dame moves on. Out score Michigan in 2H. Coach Brey makes major adjustments at halftime and overcome a big deficit (12 pts) to lead his team to victory.
We beat Notre Dame. Back in February. I remember it well.
Tonight we had a six point lead at half. Not sure what adjustments we made, but a 21 point 2H explosion was the result.
Insanity is defined by doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting the same result. H2P

Oops --- expecting a different result. Too many night caps.

Some coaches do more actual coaching than others

Greg Marshall is one of the highest compensated coaches in college. Factor in unlimited use of private planes for recruiting and personal use, would probably not return a phone call from Pitt.

Without paying the players no one is bringing in top 10 recruiting classes to Pitt. Without grossly overpaying no HC people would get excited about is coming here either. If you want a change your taking a flyer on a young mid major coach and if he fails now what do you do ?
