Teel article on ACC Network

Yea, there will be SOMETHING, but what?

Best case is a channel. Worst case is just a "branding" on existing channels. "Welcome to the ACC Network on ESPN2."

I have been wondering how a premium channel might work. Say, you pay $10/month or $50/ year to get an ACCN premium channel plus the app. But that would alienate a whole lot of casual fans. Can you imagine the casual Yinzer paying for an ACCN premium channel to watch Pitt vs Virginia in football?

I personally dont think we will see a premium channel because the ACC's appeal is too broad to offer it to only diehards like Fox Soccer Plus but I'm hoping for something besides "Welcome to our ACC Network Game of the week here on your Raycom affiliate."

it reminds me of the Big East Network on some ny channel.. Caught it by accident one day.. My man Charles smith was sitting at a desk with Big East on the front and it was calling itself the Big East network. I was like, sweet, I didn't know this existed.. Found out it was pretty much a 30 minute show on some channel once a week.

I believe they are working on something that not only will generate more revenue, but will be a partnership, much like the SECN with the SEC and ESPN, and will also offer greater viewership, branding, etc on platforms that will adjust well with the changing cable environment.

That is just like the ACC Network on Raycom. And when Pitt was in the Big East, it was the same. That is the syndicated package.

Tough to imagine enough content for a network.. How many reruns of Duke Vs UNC can you watch during the down times.. I see the big 10 station and they'll have these classic games on, it will be like Rutgers against psu from 2 or 3 years ago.. Not exactly a classic imo.. Don't get me wrong, some of those mid/late 80's duke/unc games would be fun to watch but 24/7?? Not so sure..

"...if money were everything, the Big Ten would have a helluva lot more than one men’s basketball and two football national titles in the last 25 years."

BOOM.

Nobody watches those. Its just cheap filler. All networks have crap like that. Its no different than some movie from 2005 being shown on TBS or USA. You cant have highlt rated programming 24/7. So, the RU/PSU game from 3 years ago is no different than the Da Vinci Code being shown over on USA at the same time. Nobody is watching either.

Even the 'worst case' is a start and better what they have now. Nothing.
Pitt's just starting to get into the Olympic sports but a lot of ACC schools have been pumping major $ in them for years. At least this would help that.

It depends what it looks like. My worst case, is really l, nothing at all, just making an ACCN logo and calling Pitt vs Virginia "ACC Network on ESPN2." That isnt anything.

Nobody is going to know the details behind it until Swofford announces it. But by all accounts, it seems the ADs got enough information that it has comforted any concerns. I just don't know how you know what the best and worst case scenarios are.

They already have that now.

Yea, on Raycom. I just hope they dont move that "branding" to ESPN and act like we got something.

I know we are beating this to death but another idea is a hybrid ESPNews/ACCN. There has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about rebranding ESPNews since the channel has become a little obsolete in today's up to the minute info on cell phones.

What if ESPN rebrands it as ACCN in ACC markets and keeps it as ESPNews in non-ACC markets? But, in San Francisco, for example, at 4PM PT, it will take a break from ESPNews programming to show the ACC basketball game between Wake and GT. So, in other markets, its ESPNews with live ACC games. In ACC markets, its ACCN with 24/7 ACC programming.

If that is what will make the most money and get the most distribution, then that is what will happen. But if I were you, I wouldn't worry about the details right now because no one knows what they are outside of Swofford, the ADs and presidents and some at ESPN.

Both sides will do what is best for the partnership.

I think ESPNews is around 30 cents per subscriber and on an upper tier with ESPNU, NFL Network, NHL Network, etc. To me, it would seem to make sense for them to ask the cable companies to pay 70 cents more per subscriber for live sporting events, including 15-20 home team games per year.

As a selfish consumer, having a premium subscription would be great. It wouldn't shock me if they offered a cable channel with an over-the-top alternative option as HBO is doing now. ESPN3 is a great service, but they are still too "old school" to break the chains to the cable companies.

If I could get every Pitt game by subscription, and get a separate subscription to ROOT for MLB/NHL, I'd drop my cable service in a second.

They have it on everything. You are letting your imagination run wild with you here. ESPN can't pull a fast one here. The either have to start a network, or they have to pay the ACC the $2 million a year.

No, currently, Raycom brands its games as the "ACC Network." ESPN does not and Fox Sports South does not. My worst-case scenario is that all ACC games on ALL networks (ESPN, FSS, Raycom) are branded as ACC Network with same logo, same graphics, and perhaps more cooperation in scheduling. Like instead of ESPN having 2 Wedensday games, FSS having 2, and Raycom having, moving some of those games to Tuesday and Thursday and cross-promoting them on competiting networks like ESPN does for the NBA and MLS games on other networks.

You really need to stop wringing your hands on this repeatedly.

That wouldn't be a conference network, you know it, I know it, and I'm pretty sure that John Swofford and the conference AD's know it.
