because of last night’s football implosion. Why oh why can’t we have success in both sports at the same time.

Just venting. Glad we had our neighbors over for dinner last night to prevent me from doing anything other than sneaking peaks at ESPN app for scores after suffering through the first quarter watching it live.

It’s better than having no success in both which was the case for about 10 years in the 90’s into the 2000’s.

You might want to check the status of Hugley's knee before making a proclamation like this...😡

Let’s hope so!!! Football derailed very quickly has ruined the cfb season for me!

questions; what would you define as a successful year? NIT? Winning record? NCAA? It’s been rumored here and other places it’s NCAA or bust for Capel (which is ridiculous ultimatum not knowing who may or may not return the next year).

Top 50 kenpom. Plausible path to a tournament bid once the calendar turns to March. Subjectively looking “not stinky”

For me? All-Freshman first team for Dior. .500 record. Relevant and competitive enough that I have a reason to care in February. And enough growth that I can talk myself into being optimistic about the next year.

Also not laying an egg in game 1 and having all our commits flip to other schools.

Im going to rephrase this as, what would be a really successful year for Jeff Capel.

1) The following recruiting class coming together as of right now:

Ty-Laur Johnson, Jaland Lowe, Carlton Carrington, Marlon Barnes, and 1 of Kante / Dembele with my first choice being Kante. 3 are in, in prime shape for Johnson, and in my opinion in the top 3 at worst currently for Kante. This would be a very, very good recruiting class with instant impact players.

2) Making a push for 20 wins including post season play regardless of how we get to 20.

Recruiting classes are irrelevant if they don’t win. Pitt is getting younger while the rest of P5 is getting older. Portal is king

there aren’t more than 50 kids I’d take at an ACC school next year in the senior class

Its true that the transfer portal is more important but you cant ignore HS recruiting

We have a chance to sign 4 legit top 100 recruits that all produced heavily in AAU this year. These arent players with "fluff hype" based on athletic ability or 7 footers with potential years down the road. These players were producers and Im not including Barnes who missed a lot of time.

Our best classes in the last 30 years were classes where we signed 3 "legit" top 100 talents. Fields, Young, and Biggs in 2005. Blair, Wanamaker, Mcghee and Dodson who never made it in 2007. Big East Championships and 1 seeds followed.

Im ok with the portal with plug and play for a few players. But for right now, I very much prefer Johnson and Kante as I know what I am getting next year and years down the road as these 2 are going to produce and win at the next level. Johnson was one of the top producers out of the entire 2023 class all spring and summer long event after event. A backcourt of Ty-laur, Dior, Jaland, and Carlton Carrington is going places.

Following up on this just a bit...

Our top 3 players in the Capel era in AAU based off the AAU stats were Champ, Hugley followed by Toney. There wasn't 1 other player in AAU in the Capel era that averaged over 10ppg in AAU play unless we are talking about Mintz who decommitted and is headed to Syracuse.

Dior Johnson is the 4th Capel recruit to do it. Johnson averaged 17ppg, Champ averaged almost 20 per game in AAU. Jaland Lowe and Carlton Carrington make 6 players that averaged over 10ppg in aau in the Capel era. Lowe and Carrington had better numbers in AAU than Toney and Hugley, positions aside.

The AAU numbers in the EYBL / Peach Jam / other summer events hold quite a bit of weight. The players producing at a good level on the best teams are going to be ranked high / produce at the next level in most cases.

Its not a strange coincidence that our top 3 producing players in AAU all happened to be our best 3 players to date in the Capel era- Champ, Hugley, Toney.

That's great and all but a few of those Top 100s will eventually transfer. So you have to replace them with like guys from the portal

Some will transfer or leave for whatever reason. But you worry about who is going to leave later and sign the best players you can sign now as long as the coach believes they are producers that will win at the next level. Our coach still has a belief in a few of our remaining targets in 2023 we are trying to get to commit, he isnt waiting for the portal (which he shouldn't).

I agree. Go out and get the best HS kids you can but portal recruiting is just as important, probably more important. Its a new ballgame.

Yeah I’m probably exaggerating how bad it’s gotten and their recruiting strategy seems correct. There’s just like 50 kids (around) who can impact an ACC team right away and when they pass unlimited transfers it’s gonna get awfully frustrating. Tampering/portal/being second may be better than originally getting a kid in the near future.

It’s actually really enjoyable to have a quality discussion about whether the portal or hs recruiting is more important for Capel right now. For years we were desperate just to grab anyone who wanted to play college basketball. Feels different heading into this season! H2P

Still feels like it’s easier to keep a kid that you already have than win him out of the portal though, right?

In some cases for sure. Depends what you promised and what was delivered in recruiting, record, NIL opportunities etc. i don’t think anyone could know how this will play out if they go to unlimited transfers.

I'm not sure being 2nd isnt already more important. Seems like now your freshman, maybe sophomore year is just a tryout for NIL boosters and other programs. All the college teams are basically AAU teams now anyway.

They’ll still want some sort of relationship with the staff, some idea of how you’ll be used, what you can offer etc. being 2nd like with Devonshire will be valuable in the future if you maintain relationships.

Those strong classes you cite had a big edge that produced big years. A really good coach. Haven't seen that yet with Capel. Hope he handles things well. And I'm more interested in THIS year's team. They're already in school and practicing. The 2023 commits aren't yet.

I hear what you are saying NTOP, but its good to know that there seems to be an uptick in recruiting success for future years as well. It’s like the groundwork is being laid.

I sort of look at this years team as the patchwork that I hope gets us to a more stable place for the recruits coming in.

My expectations are not high. I certainly want to be over 500 overall and near there in conference. I would love the discussion in February to be what we need to do since we are being mentioned as a bubble team. It would be awesome to go in to the ACC tourney where people discuss how many wins we would need to possibly get us a bid and the number of wins is less tHan 3.

I don't think you will like him but you should talk to that guy who suggested zigging (recruit HS) when everyone else is zagging (hitting the portal)...

Success to me would be a .500 or better ACC record and the NIT at a minimum. Do that in conjunction with maintaining/adding to this current recruiting class, and I'm not sure how they could sanely part with Capel. His resume would still suck from an overall standpoint, but at least he'd be on his way to improving the product... so it'd be silly to pay millions of dollars to get someone else in here to do what he's already doing.

Lots of ifs in that scenarios, though. Lots of ifs.

Hopefully last year was his new yr 1. If alot comes together, they might equal his first yr 2. I can't see much more than that yet.

Still no tickets from the ticket office.
All tickets, by default, will be electronic through the Pitt app. There are no paper tickets this year unless you special ordered them, and then you have to pick them up from will call at the Pete. They didn't mail any out.

And this is the last year you can get paper tickets at all.

Paper tickets weren't available at all for the women.

That is true but they still don't have them loaded in the app. Or at least they don't have mine loaded.

I would imagine this week they will send out an email saying when they were going to be uploaded.
