Somerhing has to give tonight. Virginia Tech has not beaten Pitt since the Clinton administration (Bill that is) and we were 10 days away from Bush/Gore Election Day. You might remember that was the game when Brandon Williams stepped on Michael Vick's ankle and knocked him out of the game and we lost on a last second FG to the #2 ranked Hokies. That seems like forever ago.

So, now with 12 days to go before Bill's wife is elected, one day shy of 16 years since their last victory over Pitt, can VT get it done?

Something has to give tonight because Pitt doesn't lose to Virginia Tech, but it also usually loses big prime-time (especially Thursday night) home games vs ranked teams.

Its hard to imagine Pitt losing to VT but its also hard to imagine Pitt capitalizing on a nationally televised Thursday night home game and beating a ranked team at home. By my estimation, we are 1-4 vs ranked teams at Heinz on Thursday nights (0-2 vs Miami, 0-1 vs UNC, 1-1 vs WVU).

To take the next step, this is a game PITT has to win.

It's just that simple.

I don't think HCPN has beating a ranked team (at the time Pitt played them). This will be a great measuring stick.

The last time Virginia Tech won in Pittsburgh the two teams played at Pitt Stadium. Unfortunately I think that streak ends tonight.

We did beat Miami on a Thursday Night in '97, Walt's 1st year, @ Pitt Stadium, was a huge upset.

We certainly treated it as a huge upset, but I don't think it was. Miami was ranked #21 and Pitt was 2-1. Anyways, this was one of the defining moments for me in becoming a Pitt fan.

We always had VTech's number, no matter how bad we were and how highly ranked they were. And the loss to us always seemed to send them into a 2-3 loss tailspin to end their season. But Beamer is gone and this isn't the same Hokies...I think. I have no idea how we will fare tonight. I'm hopeful our D found something at the end of the Virginia game that they can sustain and build on.

As far as the game goes, are the Thursday night games usually at 7? I see this being a late arriving crowd given people need to get home from work and then fight the tail end of rush hour to get down there. I thought these games have usually started at 8 but am probably mistaken.

It was an big upset, Miami was still a big time team, and we where coming off of the Majors II apocalypse, it was very uplifting to me.

Nationally televised, big game for Pitt. Will the Pitt fans hold up their end by showing up and provide any sort of atmosphere? Will the people attending the game sit on their hands?

Was my freshman year and our floor (6) of Tower B was absolutely destroyed in celebration (we got in a lot of trouble for that). It reminded me, to a much lesser scale, of when the bball team made the run to the BE Finals in 2000. It wasn't like beating Miami of the 80s but it did signal that Pitt was no longer the easy pushover doormat.

I loved it. Was on the field with the other students celebrating. I just think we over estimate that victory being a huge upset as if Miami was ranked really high. They weren't very good.

Probably. Pitt fans have always come up small in these situations as long as I can remember. I don't remember ever being impressed by turnout, aside from the biggest of games. Especially on a weeknight. But I will be there.

Never have beaten us at Heinz Field. Don't think that's gonna go on forever. Hopefully we extend it at least one more game. Biggest game of the year so far, need a win to stay alive in the division and would certainly be ranked next week.

The 97 Miami game renewed my enthusiasm as a Pitt fan I admit... I was a kid in the 70s and a student during Gottfried era so by Hackett Majors 2 I wasn't even paying attention really.... the WVU game that year was a barn burner fantastic game!!

7:30 or 7:45 but a few times a year they move it up to 7 to get in a Pac 12 game at 10:30, which they are doing tonight. Last year's UNC game was a 7PM start as part of an ACC/P12 doubleheader.

They where still #22 and we where coming off a couple years of losing 70-0 pretty often.

Why is it hard to imagine Pitt losing to VT? game is a toss-up.

My God you really are a giant heaping bowl of urine soaked cheerios, aren't you?

You must be a riot at parties.

Why should fans expect Pitt to deliver when their fans continue to embarrass the program with their lack of support? Show up and be loud.

uh, no, fans don't win games, players and coaches do. They should be able to win in an empty stadium if they are any good.
Recruits want to play in front of a supportive crowd. You need good players to be a good program.

I like to focus on Pitt. If Pitt fans focused their time, energy, and resources on Pitt then we could get somewhere. If a Pitt fan donated $5 every time they mentioned that Cow College, then we would have enough money for our own stadium.

I was paying attention and it was as sad as advertised, at least by the latter part of Majors 2.

More noise won't change the outcome of a game. Players have to play. I played in games in front of 10000+ fans in high school, when I was on the field, it didn't even seem like anyone was watching at all.

More noise does play a role in an evenly matched, close game. It also leaves a good impression on potential recruits.

Outside of the ND game last season, this team has shown up ready to play under this coaching staff. Tonight, I am expecting the same from a team that is sprinkled with Seniors on both sides of the ball. Seniors carry a focus and intensity because this is their last time to make an impact for their college team. Guys like Biz, Price, Conner (even though he's not a senior) will have this team focused on continuing to find ways to win against VT.
