Today David Cameron (British Prime Minister) was answering questions from the members of the BHOC. The subject was " National Security and Combating ISIS.

The questions were asked quickly and answered quickly. The people involved seemed more intelligent than our members of congress. Also, the PM had too have a lot of knowledge to answer so quickly. (he did have a large tablet with him)

I know we have some scholarly people on the board. Do you know if the PR get's the questions ahead of time? If he doesn't he must have a vast storage of knowledge to be able to respond so quickly.

Reminds me of when Rs asked Obama questions about the Affordable Care Act and got totally owned.

I don't know the answer to your question, Ric. But I've always found this part of British government fascinating. I wish it would happen here on a regular basis instead of the campaign speech that the State of the Union has become.

Actually, if our Constitution were being followed, there would be no need to do that - because the President would be an administrator rather than out front on issues. But since that changed many years ago, a Q&A with Congress would be good.

That sounds like you don't want the State of the Union to occur, even though it is in the Constitution and the President is supposed to make recommendations during the address.

The speech is not in the constitution. For many years it didn't even exist.

He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.

Would you rather he send an email?

That's a pretty loose requirement, as shown by the fact that presidents did not have an official "State of the Union" speech for a long time. The President speaking to one Representative or Senator about Issue X while playing golf could be construed as giving Congress information of the State of the Union and his recommendations for consideration.

Reminds me of when Rs asked Obama questions about the Affordable Care Act and got totally owned.

Too bad smart-ass lies aren't money or Obama could've kept all those Obamacare co-ops running all on his own.

Didn't George Washington deliver the first State of the Union to a joint session of Congress?

But since it's Obama... grrrrrrrrr.

Did Cameron lie???

That doesn't say he should make an address at any specific interval, or even an address. The E-mails would be on a private, illegal server.

Yes...about every 5 years.

it's the reason he's a prime minister instead of a president. PM's are actually members of the HOC. so it's a different set up. our president is accountable to the people directly since they vote for him. brits vote for a party, who then makes someone the PM from that party. so he's accountable to them directly.

now, those Q&A sessions are great theater. back when i didn't have kids and had time to watch that stuff, i always enjoyed it. could watch it all day.

Learn something every day.

Got it.

George Washington gives state of the union speech. That's ok

Now that Obama is doing so... problem.
Where did I say that? I've ALWAYS had issues with the SOTU speech - at least since it has been a campaign speech. I didn't hear GW's speech so I can't tell you if it was or wasn't, although I suspect it much more relevant than Obama's. After Adams, Jefferson broke with speeches and they didn't return until until Wilson in 1913. So don't even pretend they've always been done.

Got it?

What I get is that many of these issues suddenly reared their ugly heads most notably when Obama was elected President. We had how many years of State of the Union speeches going back as far as Woodrow Wilson consecutively, and back as far as George Washington non consecutively. However, now that it's Obama on tv giving the speech, people are pissed and making it an issue.

Hmm.

Well, my history here began after Obama was elected.

So take your "Hmmm" and shove it.

But I thought he would unite us??? 1/21/2017 can't get here soon enough.

Exactly. Thanks for making my point.
Hardly. It was purely coincidental that I started posting after he was elected. My first posts were in a conversation with Ric about books. I wasn't even political then.

Of course, since you're a racist, you only think its about his being black.

Just ask NTOP. He probably remembers it as if it were yesterday.

Once again, you try to make it about race. I guess that's what is on your mind 27/7. A black guy is president. Grrrrr.

Is it really just a coincidence that you started posting about politics AFTER Obama was elected, complaining about stuff that has been going on long before President Obama. The SOTU is just your latest complaint. Going on for a long time. George Washington even did it. But since it's Obama... now a big problem that should be stopped. Hilarious.

It is just a coincidence..since it coincides with my retirement to NC.

Got it, racist?
