Teryl Austin, Quintin Jones, John Lewis and some others were part of the infamous 1985 defensive backfield known as "The Burnt Toast Patrol." The Burnt Toasters gave up 207 yards a game and ranked 76th out of 105 teams in pass defense.
For those of you who have seen this year's edition of the Burnt Toast Patrol in person (I haven't), how do they stack up athletically to that '85 team? Of course, opposing offenses have changed a lot 21 years.
The last-minute loss to BC because of Austin seemed like shades of last week, and then there was the game that Temple lit him up for an 80-yard play.
Poring over that roster, it's hard to believe we all lived through some of those seasons. Two years later, though, Austin had become a player and we had Gary Richard and Billy Owens. So there is hope... And who wouldn't love to have the current squad only giving up 207 passing yards?
